There is disclosed a dental handpiece comprising a grip sleeve, a head portion provided at one end of the handpiece, a drive unit provided in the head portion for driving a dental implement, and a connecting portion arranged at an opposite end of the handpiece for rotation relative to the grip sleeve and releasably connected at one end to the grip sleeve. The connecting portion serves to convey operating media for the handpiece, and is adapted for connection at its other end to a supply tube for supplying the operating media. In order to provide built-in illumination in the region of the dental implement, an elongate photoconductive device is provided which extends generally longitudinally within the handpiece and includes, within the rotatable connecting portion, a light transmitting portion in the form of either a section of a strand like photoconductor, or an electrically operated bulb. The light transmitting portion is located, at least at the end of the connecting portion facing the grip sleeve, substantially centrally, whereby light can be transmitted along the photoconductive device, regardless of the rotational position adopted by the connecting portion relative to the grip sleeve.

A dental handpiece with a gripping sleeve-like base member which is detachably connected with a headpiece mounting a work tool, a connecting sleeve of the headpiece being insertable into the power-take off end of the base member, wherein a roll body is radially movably supported in each of one or more cutouts in the base member wall, inwardly extending therethrough with a portion of its volume, which is movable through the intermediary of a coupling element movably arranged on the base member, and which includes an inclined plane for the engagement with the roll body under the assumption of a clamping fit in contact against the connecting sleeve.

A dental handpiece having a holding sleeve, an air-driven unit mounted at one end of the sleeve to drive a dental tool, and a connecting member releasably and relatively rotatably connected to the other end of the sleeve. A supply hose for conveying fluid pressure media is coupled releasably and non-rotatably to the end of the connecting member remote from the sleeve, and communicating fluid pressure lines in the connecting member and in the sleeve convey fluid pressure media between the hose and consumers of fluid pressure media at the free end of the sleeve, such as the tool-drive unit. The releasable connection between the connecting member and the sleeve is provided by a pin on the connecting member which is received by a passage in the sleeve. The fluid pressure lines in the connecting member extend also generally lengthwise along the pin, but terminate in radial portions having outlet apertures which are axially spaced along the outer periphery of the pin. Each outlet aperture is located between a respective pair of seals engaging between the wall of the passage and the outer periphery of the pin, and communication with a corresponding fluid pressure line in the sleeve is established, when the pin is inserted into a releasable detent position in the passage, via an annular duct formed in the wall of the passage.

A dental handpiece having a sleeve, an axial drive shaft in the sleeve for driving a dental instrument at one end of the handpiece, a first coolant supply line in the handpiece, a second coolant supply line extending axially towards the dental instrument, and a coolant duct in the wall of the sleeve which intercommunicates the first and second coolant lines. The coolant duct extends rectilinearly and generally radially between an inner end which faces the interior of the sleeve and which communicates with the first coolant line, and an outer end which communicates with and is releasably connected to the second line at a location in the wall of the sleeve and which permits manipulation externally of the handpiece for releasing and connecting the duct and the second line.

A miniature motor for driving a hand-held instrument such as a dental handpiece, the motor having at one end a connecting member for supplying coolant to a motor coolant line and motive energy to the motor, and at the other end a coupling member to which a hand-held instrument can be releasably connected. An intermediate coolant line in the coupling member serves to transfer coolant from the motor coolant line to a coolant supply line in the instrument which directs the coolant to a working implement at one end of the instrument. The coolant line in the motor comprises a tubular member which is removably mounted in the motor and has a releasable connection at its inlet end to a coolant supply connector in the connecting member, and a releasable connection at its outlet end to the intermediate coolant line in the coupling member. At least one of these releasable connections is provided in a closure member which is removable in order to render the tubular member accessible for servicing.

A device for clamping and unclamping dental tools as, for example, drills, in a dental handpiece with an angled head in which the tool is held by means of a two-part clamping unit. One part of this clamping unit has a collet for holding the tool, and the other part of the clamping unit has a driven rotary hollow shaft located in the head. The collet is movable lengthwise inside the hollow shaft. To assume its clamped or unclamped position, the collet and hollow shaft are threadable into one another. One of the two parts of the clamping unit has at least one key surface accessible from the exterior at the tool end of the head. The other part of the clamping unit has also at least one key surface accessible from the exterior. A U-shaped carrier is provided with a first flange having a stationary key with parts for engagement with the key surfaces located at the tool end of the head. The other flange of the carrier has a pin-shaped key projecting into the area between the two flanges and axially movable in a hollow space of an exterior attachment of this other flange against the action of a spring in the direction away from the first flange. The pin-shaped key can be rotated manually by means of a knob on the key and projecting from the attachment. The pin-shaped key has a handle mounted on the U-shaped carrier and is actuatable by finger pressure applied transversely to the longitudinal axis of the key to axially move the key against the action of the spring.

Connector for rotary dental tools and the like, comprising a housing, a support sleeve rotatably journaled in the housing to receive a shaft of a dental tool, wherein the sleeve is in the form of a circumferentially closed tubular member that surrounds the shaft without any play, and clamping means between the sleeve and the shaft, for immobilizing the tool prior to imparting rotary movement thereto, the clamping means being elastically deformable in the radial direction, and short in comparison to the length of the sleeve. Two exemplary embodiments are disclosed, one including a mechanism that includes a follower and a clamping nut for the tool, while the other has an inner turbine wheel and a conical support ring with a collar and a biasing spring acting on the clamping means.

Connector for dental tools

A dental handtool in which an extended sleeve has at its center, a driving shaft for rotary movement of the tool used for dental treatment. The driving shaft is at one end of the sleeve, and a freely rotating driving part is attached to the handtool at the opposite end of the sleeve. A coolant pipe between the driving part and the handtool, feeds coolant to the treatment area of the dental tool.
