The delivery of fuel into the combustion chamber of a diesel engine is aided by blowing in an amount of compressed air which is small compared to the stroke volume of the diesel engine after the stream of fuel has been injected into the combustion chamber via the fuel nozzle. In this way fuel particles which would otherwise remain in the injection nozzle and considerably increase the hydrocarbon content of the exhaust are removed from the nozzle and burned, at the same time clearing the nozzle holes of any remaining fuel. The compressed air blown in after fuel injection will assist combustion of the red-hot particles of the fuel stream which have formed immediately beyond the nozzle.

A fuel injection pump for internal combustion engines, in which a solenoid valve controlled by at least one of the state variables essential for operation of the engine, such as load, engine speed, pressure and temperature of combustion air, etc., controls the injection process by means of a shut-off device loaded by a spring on one end, the shut-off device being in one end position during the time of injection, but is subject to the feed pressure on both ends and is resting in the other end position while the pump is being filled. The chamber guiding the end of the slide-type shut-off device opposite the spring, is directly linked with the pump chamber of the high-pressure pump by a duct. In this manner the reversal of the slide takes place abruptly, which will permit a much better adaptation of the injection process to the different state variables of the combustion engine than before.

Fuel injection pump for internal combustion engines

In an internal combustion engine an engine unit support is attached to an engine housing which is extended in upward direction. The two-part crankshaft bearings are attached to the engine unit support such that their upper part is fastened to the upper part of the engine unit support by mounting screws which can be handled from above and outside of the engine housing. The assembly unit which consists of crankshaft and crankshaft main bearings is supported in the engine housing by means of sound insulating elements. The whole design thus facilitates assembly and disassembly of the engine.

In an internal combustion engine comprising a crankshaft (7) and crankshaft main bearings (6), an engine unit support (1) which supports the crankshaft main bearings, and a cylinderhead (3) mounted on the engine unit support (1), which are engine parts directly affected by body resonance and sound vibration, at least one vibration absorbing and power transmitting element (15) located between the engine parts directly affected by sound vibration and the crankcase (8), a sealing element (21) located in a joint between a engine unit support (1) and the crankcase (8) which seals an encapsulated upper dry engine region oil-tightly against a lower oil-wetted engine region (22), an elastic filling element (19) bridging at least a part of the joint being inserted into the joint before the mounting of the sealing element (21) and supporting the latter, whereby the sealing element (21) comprises a viscous material forming an adhesive compound with metal which is resilient after curing. Thus, the rubber material of the vibration absorbing elements (15) can be chosen without regard for the oil-resistance and customary vibration absorbing elements can be used without a specific adaption. Furthermore, this arrangement of the sealing element does not require a specific machining of the surfaces lying close to the sealing element.

A compression ignition, direct injection internal combustion engine which includes at least each one cylinder, with an associated piston and injection nozzle, the piston having a combustion chamber in its head in the form of a body of rotation. The combustion chamber includes below the crown of the piston a constriction which divides the chamber in an upper part and a lower part. The connecting passage formed by the constriction between the upper part and the lower part of the chamber includes a number of additionally connecting canals in the region of the circumference of the chamber, which are groovelike and open to the chamber. Based on the specific forms and arrangements of the connecting canals, a marked micro turbulence of the cylinder charge, a better mixture formation and an improved combustion process, with lower amounts of unburnt hydrocarbons and soot in the exhaust, is achieved.

An internal combustion engine comprises an engine unit support which contains the engine parts directly affected by body resonance (cylinderhead, cylinder, piston, connecting rod, crankshaft main bearing, and crankshaft) and a crankcase connected to the engine unit support by flanges located above the crankshaft. The crankshaft main bearings consist of bearing blocks and bearing caps which are connectable to main bearing units independently from the main bearing bolts. The bearing units are detachably secured to the engine unit support. The crankcase is provided with at least one aperture closed by at least one cover part below the crankshaft, said apertures providing access to the main bearing bolts. Dismounting of the engine unit support is enabled with the crankshaft and the main bearing units mounted thereon remaining in the crankcase and the crankcase remaining mounted on its place, for instance in a vehicle.

A motor vehicle has an engine equipped with an oil sump which is secured in a body-sound-insulated manner to the engine block, and a fan-cooled water radiator, a frame-mounted elastic membrane being provided between the oil sump and the vehicle body components so that the membrane completely encircles the oil sump at its upper edge and provides an acoustic separation between the spaces respectively situated above and below the oil sump, the upper space comprising a sound suppressing encapsulation which is closed relative to the vehicle interior by appropriate wall panels, partitions and sealing sections provided in the vehicle body.
