The invention concerns the use of an asymmetric porous membrane for the evenly distributed concentration of a substance which is not or not substantially adsorbed to the membrane and which is brought into contact with the membrane in the form of a membrane-wetting solution on the fine-pored side of the membrane.

The invention concerns a method for the detection of an analyte in a sample liquid by an enzyme-immunoassay in which an enzyme-labelled compound is partitioned between a solid and a liquid phase and the amount of enzyme label in the liquid phase outside the solid phase is determined as a measure of the concentration of the analyte. The present invention provides a method of improving reagent elution from a reagent strip comprising a handle on one end which is affixed an absorbent carrier impregnated with a reagent.
