The invention relates to an operating unit, especially for operating a multimedia system in a motor vehicle, comprising an operating element that can be rotated about an axis (z), that can be moved along said axis of rotation (z) and that can be locked in a position () on said axis (z). The invention is based on the object of executing the contacting and fastening of a display element, particularly for a LCD (liquid crystal display), with an arranagement that is simple to execute in terms of production engineering. The display element is illuminated from behind by a light box.
