The 29 bit identifier field of a standard CAN protocol message format is subdivided into a message function portion, a class one node identifier portion, to identify class one nodes which must be able to communicate with each other as well as with a large number of other nodes in the system, and a selectable node identifier portion, the vast majority of which is utilized for class two node identifiers, to identify class two nodes which never need to communicate with each other, but only need to communicate with class one nodes, and a small portion of which is utilized for class one node identifiers for cases where two class one nodes are communicating with each other. The least significant eight bits of the selectable portion represent class one identifiers when the most significant eight bits of the selectable portion are all zeros, but when any of the most significant eight bits of the selectable portion represents a one, then the lowest ordered eight bits are part of a class two identifier. Thus, the selectable portion can identify, for example, 256 class one nodes and 65,280 class two nodes.

In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, an electronic safety system for elevators for preventing unsafe elevator operation has a central controller which monitors a variety of sensors, contacts, and switches over an electronic safety bus. A plurality of bus nodes are distributed throughout the elevator system and are in constant communication with the central controller over the safety bus. The bus nodes interface with sensors, switches, contacts, detectors, components, and other safety equipment of the elevator system at each location and provide status information back to the controller. The controller consists of a microprocessor board with an input/output port in communication with the safety bus and bus nodes. Upon sensing an unsafe condition, the controller sends control signals to an elevator control system and a drive and brake system to arrest the elevator car in a safe manner.

An apparatus for determining if an elevator car is level with respect to a landing comprises: a first magnet disposed proximate to the landing; a second magnet disposed proximate to the landing; a sensor for providing a level signal in response to detecting a minimum flux region formed by the first and second magnets; and a processor for determining if the elevator is level with respect to the landing in response to the level signal. Each magnet has a first and second magnetic pole. The first and second magnets are adjacently aligned such that the first magnetic pole of the first magnet is adjacent to the first magnetic pole of the second magnet, and the second magnetic pole of the first magnet is adjacent to the second magnetic pole of the second magnet.

Differential magnetic alignment of an elevator and a landing

A constant bias velocity is dictated from a profile generator, while a torque value sent to an elevator drive is increased linearly until motion is detected. Then, the torque value is frozen. A normal velocity profile is started and coupled without discontinuity to the prior bias velocity dictation. In response to activation of an elevator loadweighing switch, an initial torque value is provided without boundary values stored in a table. Such static friction keeps an elevator car motionless when an elevator brake is lifted.
