The present invention relates to a method for controlling an electrical generator comprising a two-stroke free piston internal combustion engine having a first cylinder and a second cylinder aligned on a common axis, a first piston pair comprising a first piston and a second piston located in the first cylinder, a second piston pair comprising a first piston located in the second cylinder and connected to the second piston in the first cylinder by a first connecting rod and a second piston located in the second cylinder and connected to the first piston in the first cylinder by a second connecting rod, with the first and second pistons of each piston pair moving in opposite directions to one another, a fuel supply for providing fuel to at least one of the first cylinder or the second cylinder, and a generator comprising at least one rotor connected to at least one of the first connecting rod or the second connecting rod, and at least one stator winding that cooperates with the at least one rotor to generate electricity. The method comprises detecting at least one of piston speed or piston position for at least one of the first piston pair or the second piston pair, and adjusting a compression ratio in at least one of the first cylinder or the second cylinder by at least one of impinging a voltage on the stator winding or altering the fuel supply.

An electromagnetic actuator for actuating a gas-reversing valve on a piston internal combustion engine includes two electromagnets. Each electromagnet includes a one yoke body presenting a pole face. The pole faces of the two electromagnets face each other at a distance. Each yoke body has two parallel grooves that are open toward the pole face and form a coil window with a coil disposed in the coil window. An armature is arranged to move back and forth between the pole faces counter to the force of at least one restoring spring. The two electromagnets each have a different load profile.

A method for controlling an electromagnetic actuator operating a gas exchange valve in an internal combustion piston engine. Between two electromagnets an armature, connected to the gas exchange valve, is reciprocated by a return spring between the electromagnets whose alternating energization moves the valve into open and closed positions. The lift of the armature is detected by a sensor array during its movement from one pole face to the other. Depending on the detected actual values of the armature lift, the energy flow to the electromagnets is controlled such that the armature moves at a speed tending to zero at a predetermined distance range from the pole face of the capturing electromagnet. At the end of the lift motion, the current flow through the capturing electromagnet is guided in such a way that the armature is maintained oscillating at a short distance from the pole face of the capturing electromagnet.

The invention relates to a method for controlling an electromagnetic actuator for activating a gas exchange valve on a reciprocating internal combustion engine, said gas exchange valve having two electromagnets that are set apart from each other and between which an armature that acts on the gas exchange valve against the force of at least one return spring is guided in such a way that it can move back and forth between the pole faces of the two electromagnets. The electromagnets are alternately subjected to a receiving current by means of a control unit and the movement of the armature on its path from one pole face to the other is detected by means of a sensor unit. Actual values relating to the movement of the armature are detected by the sensor unit in a first phase (I) beginning with the start of the release of the armature from the pole face of the holding electromagnet; the receiving electromagnet is controlled by the control unit in terms of the supply of current, according to the detected actual values relating to the movement of the armature, in a second phase (II), in such a way that the armature moves at a predetermined speed and with an acceleration around zero, within a predetermined range away from the pole face of the receiving electromagnet; and in a third phase (III), the supply of current of the receiving electromagnet is influenced in such a way that the armature meets the pole face at a predetermined minimum speed.

An engine valve assembly for an internal-combustion engine includes an engine valve having open and closed positions and a first oscillating mass; a closing spring connected to the valve for urging it into its closed position. The assembly has an electromagnetic actuator which operates the valve and which includes a first and a second electromagnet having respective first and second pole faces oriented toward one another and defining a space therebetween; an armature movable back and forth in the space between the first and second pole faces; and a guide bar affixed to the armature. The guide bar has an end oriented toward the valve and defining therewith a valve clearance when the valve is in its closed position and the armature is in contact with one of the electromagnets. The armature and the guide bar together have a second oscillating mass which is at least twice the first oscillating mass. The assembly further has an opening spring connected to the guide bar for urging the armature and the guide bar toward the valve.
