A composition for use as a binder in a non-aqueous printing ink which comprises a modified hydrocarbon resin containing carboxylic acid units, the carboxylic groups of which are partially esterified with a polyhydric alcohol in such an amount that the modified hydrocarbon resin product contains from 0.01 to 0.7 ester groups of polyhydric alcohol based on each acid group originally present and a process for its preparation.

Modified hydrocarbon resin composition for use in printing ink

A modified hydrocarbon resin comprising (A) a major amount of a cycloaliphatic diene resin component and (B) a minor amount of an olefinically unsaturated polycarboxylic acid component, wherein at least 5% of the carboxyl groups are esterified with an alcohol selected from the group consisting of (a) a monohydric, (b) a dihydric alcohol and (c) a combination of (a) and (b), a process for its preparation and a printing ink composition containing said modified hydrocarbon resin.

Printing ink binder

A process for the preparation of a graft copolymer which comprises reacting (I) a hydrocarbon resin based on cyclopentadiene or methylcyclopentadiene or both at an elevated temperature with (II) an olefinically unsaturated polycarboxylic acid compound and (III) a copolyerisable unsaturated monomer in a manner such that for at least a part of the reaction the unsaturated monomer (III) and the polycarboxylic acid compound (II) are simultaneously present, a graft-polymer based on I. a hydrocarbon resin based on cyclopentadiene or methylcyclopentadiene or on both as essential monomers, II. olefinically unsaturated polycarboxylic acid compounds and III. copolymerisable unsaturated monomers and a printing ink which comprises, as at least part of the binder component, said polymer, a pigment and a solvent.
