The instant invention is directed to a process for the production of isocyanate polyisocyanates containing at least 50%, by weight, of tris-isocyanatomonoisocyanurates and at most 3%, by weight, of isocyanurate-free diisocyanate. The process comprises catalytically trimerizing the organic diisocyanates free from isocyanurate groups and terminating the trimerization reaction by deactivation of the catalyst after 5 to 40% of the isocyanate groups of the isocyanurate-free diisocyanate have been trimerized. The unreacted isocyanurate-free diisocyanate is then distilled off in the presence of from 1 to 30%, by weight, based on the end product obtained as distillation residue, of an inert liquid distillation aid which boils at a temperature at least 50.degree. C. above the boiling point of the isocyanurate-free diisocyanate. The invention is also directed to the products produced by this process.

This invention relates to a process for the production of polyureas by reacting organic polyisocyanates with diamines, optionally in the presence of other polyfunctional compounds, i.e. polyfunctional in the isocyanate polyaddition context, having isocyanate-reactive hydrogen atoms, which is distinguished by the fact that the polyisocyanates used have an NCO-content of about 0.5 to 25%, by weight, and which, in addition, have an acylated urea group ##STR1## content of about 0.5 to 50% by weight and, optionally, a carbodiimide group (-N=C=N-) content of about 0 to 25% by weight. The amount of unreacted 1-isocyanato-3,3,5-trimethyl-5-isocyanatomethyl-cyclohexane (IPDI) mixed with an adduct of IPDI and a polyhydroxyl compound having two or three hydroxyl groups in a solution thereof in a conventional lacquer solvent is reduced by mixing the solution with from 0.1 to 10 mols monohydric alcohol per mol of unreacted IPDI in the solution to provide a polyisocyanate solution adapted for use in making coating materials such as lacquers.
