Expandable reamer assemblies include an expandable reamer module and an activation module. An outer tubular body of the activation module is rigidly coupled to a tubular body of the expandable reamer module, and an activation member of the activation module is coupled to a sleeve of the expandable reamer module, the sleeve coupled to at least one blade and configured to move the at least one blade into an extended position. The sleeve moves axially responsive to axial movement of the activation member. Bottom-hole assemblies include an expandable reamer module and an activation module. The activation module is coupled to the expandable reamer module and configured to provide a motive force to the sleeve to move the sleeve opposite a direction of flow of drilling fluid. Methods of using expandable reamer modules include pairing two substantially identical expandable reamer modules and two respective different activation modules.

An apparatus for estimating a first property in a borehole penetrating the earth is described. The apparatus includes a carrier configured to be conveyed through the borehole. The apparatus also includes a first sensor disposed at the carrier and configured to perform a first measurement of the first property, the first sensor having a first direction of sensitivity; a second sensor disposed at the carrier and configured to perform a second measurement of a second property, the second sensor having a second direction of sensitivity; and a processor configured to receive the first and second measurements and to correct the first measurement using the second measurement in order to estimate the first property.

A system for controlling sensor motion during a time-dependent measurement, comprising a drilling assembly having a drill bit at one end and engaged with a drill string extending to a surface location at an opposite end thereof. A sensor is disposed in the drilling assembly for making a measurement of a formation parameter of interest. A non-rotating stabilizer is disposed in the drilling assembly proximate the sensor. The non-rotating stabilizer is adapted to reduce motion of the sensor below a predetermined level during the measurement. In one embodiment the rotational axis of the stabilizer is eccentric with respect to the borehole. In another embodiment, the non-rotating stabilizer has an extendable rib for changing the effective diameter of the stabilizer.

Apparatus and method for mechanical caliper measurements during drilling and logging-while-drilling operations

The present invention provides a drilling assembly for drilling deviated wellbores. The drilling assembly includes a drill bit at the lower end of the drilling assembly. A drilling motor provides the rotary power to the drill bit. A bearing assembly of the drilling motor provides lateral and axial support to the drill shaft connected to the drill bit. A steering device is integrated into drilling motor assembly. The steering device contains a plurality of force application members disposed at an outer surface of the drilling motor assembly. Each force application member is adapted to move between a normal position and a radially extended position to exert force on the wellbore interior when in extended position. A power unit in the housing provides pressurized fluid to the force application members. A control device for independently operating each of the force application members is disposed in the drilling motor assembly. A control circuit or unit independently controls the operation of the control device to independently control each force application member. For short radius drilling, a knuckle joint is disposed uphole of the steering device to provide a bend in the drilling assembly. During drilling of a wellbore, the force application members are operated to adjust the force on the wellbore to drill the wellbore in the desired direction.

The present invention provides an apparatus for orienting a drilling tool in a borehole, and which employs drilling mud pressure to selectively hydraulically move force-transmitting elements associated with pressure members on the exterior of the tool against the wall of the borehole, or to radially shift the drive shaft of the drilling tool in the tool casing. The tool may also include a drilling mud powered centering mechanism for maintaining the tool or the drive shaft within the tool in a centered basic position. A tool may include both pressure members and a shiftable drive shaft, as well as centering mechanisms to act on both the pressure members and the drive shaft.
