The invention refers to a container () for optical disks (), a tray () for such container () and a magazine type player () adapted to be used with such container (). Object of the invention is to provide a container () for optical disks () in which many disks () may be stored within a comparatively small space. According to the invention the container () comprises a slidable tray (), guiding means () for guiding said tray (), a cover plate () and a bottom plate (), wherein the thickness of said tray () substantially equals the sum of thicknesses of said cover plate () and said bottom plate ().

In the voice control of a device appertaining to consumer electronics, speech inputs of a user are converted into digitized voice signals. First features, which are characteristic of the individual sounds of the speech, and thus permit recognition of the spoken sounds, are extracted from the digitized voice signals. Furthermore, second features, which permit a characterization of the voice of the respective user and are used for distinguishing between the speech inputs of different users, are extracted from the digitized voice signals. This enables the device being operated to distinguish between speech inputs of the present user, which represent operator-control commands, and utterances by other persons, and to respond only to operator-control commands of the present user. Furthermore, the quality of an analysis of the viewing habits of different users can be improved by a distinction between the users.

The invention relates to a storage medium on which a set of data is stored, whereby a first data section of the data set is stored in a read-only memory area and a second data section of the data set is stored in a read/write memory area, and the data set comprises language-independent data and language-dependent data. The data set can be processed in a handling device either in a first processing form related to a first language, or in a different processing form related to a second language. Language-independent data and language-dependent data which are related to the first language are included in the first data section, and language-dependent data which are related to the second language are included in the second data section. For the processing in different form, data from the second data section as well as data from the first data section are to be used.

There is disclosed a communications terminal, including a video telephone, for transmitting and receiving video and audio. The terminal includes video recording apparatus and video reproduction apparatus with the video recording apparatus being switchable into an 'off' mode by operation of a flap. In order to use the transmission capacity of the communications terminal even when the flap is closed, an image which already exists in a video memory is transmitted. A changeover is automatically made to the video memory by operation of the flap.

A cassette for use with a recording apparatus comprises: a housing for a recording medium, the housing having a first surface and side walls, the recording medium being accessible through one of the side walls; at least a part of a chip card affixed to the housing, forming a second surface of the housing and closing the cassette, the chip card part having a memory formed integrally therewith and externally accessible contacts; and, the contacts of the chip card being positioned on the second surface to be engageable by corresponding contacts in the recording apparatus when the cassette is inserted therein. The part of the chip card forming the second surface of the housing has a marking position at which light transmissivity can be controlled. In the process of generating a compatible 4:3 letterbox format television signal, a wide aspect ration 16:9 progressive scan television signal is vertically transcoded from 575 to 431 image lines, converted to line interlaced form and horizontally compressed. A vertically transcoded interlaced luminance component is converted back to progressive scan form via interpolation, and subtracted from a vertically transcoded original progressive scan luminance component to produce a difference (helper) signal. The difference signal is time compressed and multiplexed into upper and lower edge bar regions of the letterbox format. The compatible letterbox signal also is encoded with additional information including vertical high frequency information and horizontal high frequency information separated during the transcoding and compression processes, respectively. The encoding includes modulating the color subcarrier frequency with luminance information, and intraframe averaging. The difference signal and encoded additional information are used by a 16:9 widescreen receiver to produce a 16:9 progressive scan image display with the transcoded number of lines and good resolution.
