An exhaust catalytic converter for a Diesel engine that provides for enrichment of the Diesel engine exhaust with hydrocarbons that support nitrogen oxide conversion in the catalyst. The system includes a first catalytic converter stage that is designed for NOx conversion in a first temperature range utilizing a first part of the HC enrichment volume in the exhaust and has a suitable first catalyst material charge for the purpose as well as a second catalytic converter stage that follows the first in the exhaust flow direction, the second stage being designed for NOx conversion in a second temperature range higher than the first and utilizing a second part of the HC enrichment volume in the exhaust, and containing a second catalyst material charge suitable for the purpose. By suitably tuning the system with HC enrichment, reduction of emissions of solid and volatile particles in the Diesel exhaust can be achieved.

In an exhaust gas system for an internal combustion engine for a vehicle which includes an exhaust gas conduit with an exhaust gas cleaner and a silencer, the structure-borne noise emission is reduced by coating surface areas of the exhaust system with a silencing layer consisting of metal powder which is applied by plasma spraying or sintering.

An exhaust-gas filter, for example a soot-particle filter, has a filter element which has inlet passages for the raw gas and outlet passages for the clean gas. In order as far as possible to prevent clogging of the filter over the running time caused by deposits on the filter walls, the raw-gas passages are configured with a larger cross-section than the clean-gas passages.

A method for the controlled addition of an additive to the fuel supply of a vehicle internal combustion engine, in particular a diesel engine with an exhaust particulate filter, in which the addition is performed as a function of an increase in the fuel supply. While the vehicle is in motion with the engine running, the fuel level is measured at predetermined short time intervals and, having been averaged over a predetermined number of these time intervals, is fed to a measured-value storage device in which the previous average value is compared with the new average value. When a differential value is detected in the average value comparison which exceeds a predetermined tolerance level, an addition of additive proportional to the increase in the level is triggered. After each comparison, the previous average value is erased and replaced by the new average value.

A soot burn-off filter including a monolithic filter block made of porous ceramic with a multiplicity of channels which extend in the direction of flow of the exhaust gases of a combustion engine. The channels are sealed alternately at the ends by plugs and are separated from one another by porous partition walls. The partition walls are provided with a catalytic coating and have an increased flow resistance in a region at the downstream end of the filter, the partition walls in this region being of gastight design and the catalytic coating of the partition walls ending in a region upstream of the gastight region of the partition walls.

An apparatus for the regeneration of a soot-particle filter is located in the exhaust-gas line of an air-compression, fuel-injected internal-combustion engine. The apparatus regenerates the filter using a process which burns off the soot particles in the filter. A device in the intake line is actuable as a function of the engine load and engine speed and controls the cross-section of the intake line. To prevent damage to the soot-particle filter body during a transition of the internal-combustion engine into the deceleration mode, immediately after the transition into the deceleration mode of the internal-combustion engine, the process and apparatus move the device for controlling the intake-line cross-section first out of its open position into a position to reduce the line cross-section to a minimum and thereafter continuously into its open position.

Process and apparatus for the regeneration of a soot-particle filter in

A diesel internal combustion engine in the exhaust gas line system of which is arranged a device for the ionization of soot particles contained in the exhaust gas and a device for the separation thereof from the exhaust gas stream. In order to be able to realize a low structural expenditure, the device for the ionization of the soot particles is constructed as a light source emitting ultraviolet light.

An arrangement for removing soot particles from the exhaust stream of a diesel internal combustion engine in such a manner that the soot particles are caught between conductor elements disposed at different potential, produce a short circuit and thereby burn off. In order to be able to realize a purification of the exhaust gas stream without a significant increase of the exhaust gas counterpressure, a centrifugal separator is connected to the exhaust gas line, which passes over into a soot particle collecting chamber constructed axially symmetrical to the longitudinal axis thereof; a predetermined number of electrodes is arranged in turn in the soot particle collecting chamber at a slight distance to the casing interior surface whereby the electrodes among one another or the electrodes and the soot particle collecting chamber itself are at a different potential.

Arrangement for the removal of soot particles from the exhaust gas

A monolithic exhaust gas catalyst, or catalytic converter, is arranged in a metallic housing and is supported against the inner surfaces of the housing by a resilient fiber material positioned therebetween. The resilient fiber material is provided with a catalytically active coating so that the exhaust gases which flow outside the exhaust gas catalyst and through the fiber material, are also converted by the treated fiber material.

A fuel-injected internal combustion engine wherein fuel is injected in dependence upon a quantity or volume of air supplied to the engine. A throttle valve controls the airflow rate with an O.sub.2 probe, arranged in an exhaust manifold, controlling a timing valve through a control device for enabling a timed relief of injection pressure of the fuel. An ignition starter switch is connected to the control device in such a manner that the timing valve is fully open during an operation of the ignition starter switch so as to enable a starting boost. An adjustable timing member is coupled to an operating switch provided in the control device, which operating switch closes automatically after a termination of the starting process. The timing member maintains the timing valve in a fully open position during a specific time span so as to provide for an after-start boost. An additional timing member is adapted to maintain the timing valve in a fully open position during a short time span so as to enable an acceleration enrichment. The control device renders the start boost, after-start boost, and acceleration enrichment ineffective upon the probe reaching its normal operating temperature.

An arrangement for supplying an additive to a fuel-injected air compressing internal combustion engine. The arrangement includes a feeding device arranged at an inlet or intake of the internal combustion engine and a load and/or speed dependent metering device is provided which controls the supply of the additive to the feeding device.

A soot filter in the exhaust gas flow of air-compressing internal combustion engines, with a preferably cylindrically shaped filter housing arranged in proximity of the exhaust of the internal combustion engine, to which are connected radial or tangential inlet connections and in which is arranged ceramic fiber material; the fiber material forms hollow spaces together with the inner wall surfaces of the filter housing, which hollow spaces receive the exhaust gases after flowing through the filter parts and which conduct the exhaust gases in the axial direction of the filter housing to the exhaust line axially connected thereto.

In an installation for the catalytic decontamination of exhaust gases of internal combustion engines, especially of motor vehicle internal combustion engines, in which a preferably cylindrical catalyst-monolith is supported in a corresponding housing under interposition of radially elastic elements, the housing is thereby detachably connected at least at one open side with an adjoining pipe or structural part and each monolith is inserted from that side into the housing by means of a separate insert housing and is then axially fixed by the detachable pipe or structural part.
