A method implemented, e.g., as software and a device operating according to the method for the automatic evaluation and analysis of a capnogram are provided. Measured values for an expired volume&#x2014;volume measured values&#x2014;and measured values for a carbon dioxide concentration&#x2014;concentration measured values&#x2014;are recorded for the breathing gas of a test subject. An automatic approximation of at least one part of the curve of the concentration measured values over the volume measured values is performed, by using three mutually adjacent straight lines for the approximation. The area is determined using the third straight line according to Fowler for the determination of the serial dead space Vds.

Process for operating a respirator

A process, system and device are provided for automatically recording pressure-vs.-volume curves during artificial respiration with a respirator. The inspiration pressure is increased during the supply of a breathing gas volume flow under the control of a control unit. The resulting breathing gas volume flow rate is detected and the volume is determined from the latter by integration. The control unit compares the breathing gas volume flow detected during the phase of expiration with a preselected set point and acts on an expiration valve () in the expiration line () by means of a controller in case of deviation from the set point in order to return the breathing gas volume flow to the set point.

Process for the automatic recording of pressure-vs.-volume curves during artificial respiration

The invention is directed to a method for adjusting the respirating pressure during respirating phases in a ventilating apparatus. The method is improved by providing for a volume-controlled ventilation under the conditions of pressure-controlled ventilation as well as allowing for self-respiratory activity. The method includes the steps of: fixing a respirating volume desired value V.sub.TS and an inhalation pressure desired value P.sub.IS ; actuating the inhalation valve during inhalation in a first inhalation stroke to adjust the inhalation pressure P.sub.I to the inhalation pressure desired value P.sub.IS ; comparing the respiratory volume V.sub.T to the respirating volume desired value V.sub.TS and, if the respirating volume V.sub.T is less than the respirating volume desired value V.sub.TS, then, during the next inhalation stroke following the first inhalation stroke, incrementally increasing the inhalation pressure desired value P.sub.IS by a pressure increment .DELTA.P until the respirating volume V.sub.T is greater than or equal to the respirating volume desired value V.sub.TS ; and, during each inhalation, comparing the inhalation pressure P.sub.I to the inhalation pressure desired value P.sub.IS and, if the inhalation pressure P.sub.I increases to a value greater than P.sub.IS because of an intended exhalation, then, opening the exhalation valve to an extent so that the inhalation pressure desired value P.sub.IS is reestablished as the inhalation pressure P.sub.I.
