A computer-controlled laser imaging system for switching on a laser imaging beam at the beginning of a line of an image surface has a laser and lens for emitting a laser-light beam, an acoustic/optical modulator for receiving and modulating the beam into a primary beam of first-order diffraction corresponding to the desired image and for separating in a y-direction transverse to the x-direction from the laser-light beam an unmodulated O.sup.th -order secondary beam for use in determining line start, and a first telescopic lens system and a rotary polygonal mirror for deflecting the modulated beam in the x-direction of the line to be written. The secondary beam is focussed through the first lens system on the mirror in registration with the primary modulated beam so that the primary and secondary beams cross on the mirror. A second telescopic lens system and a projecting lens receive the deflected main beam and cast it on the image surface. A photodetector in the second lens system is positioned in the secondary beam and is also positioned to intercept the primary beam generally at the beginning of a line. An electronic circuit is connected between the photodetector and the modulator for initiating modulation when the photodetector is impinged by the beams.

A system for imaging a line comprises a laser for emitting a modulated laser-light beam, an image-receiving surface, and a reflective element between the laser and the surface for deflecting the beam in an x-direction of the line to be imaged onto the surface. A lens assembly including a cylinder lens is provided between the laser and the element for focussing the beam on the element and a telescopic lens system is provided between the reflective element and the surface and including an upstream lens spaced by its focal length downstream from the reflective element and a downstream lens focussed downstream. Another simple cylinder lens is provided between the upstream and downstream lenses having a refractive power perpendicular to the x-direction. A projecting lens between the downstream lens and the image surface receives the beam from the downstream lens and focusses it on the surface. The middle lens has a refractive power perpendicular to the beam traversing it.

A method of and an apparatus for making thermocopies in which a receiving material and an ink carrier member are synchronously advanced into a sublimation area opposite each other in a predetermined relationship therebetween, and the ink carrier member is heated linewise by a modulated laser beam to provide for pixelwise heating of the ink carrier member to enable transfer of an ink layer of a predetermined density from the ink carrier ribbon to the receiving material.
