A system with a set of modules having synchronized timing. The synchronized timing of the modules enables precise coordination of measurements and stimuli for an arbitrary number of modules. The modules communicate and maintain time synchronization using a communication mechanism that may be adapted to localized positioning of modules and/or widely dispersed positioning of modules with no change to the underlying functionality in the modules.

Modular system with synchronized timing

A network for connecting a plurality of devices and the components used in constructing the network. The network includes at least one fan-out device for connecting the devices to each other. The fan-out device includes a controller, a top port and a plurality of downstream ports. The controller monitors messages received by the ports and generates messages that are sent via the ports. The network also includes a plurality of network cables, one per port. The network preferably utilizes a cabling system that includes twisted pairs for communicating the messages via the Ethernet protocol and power conductors for distributing power to the various network devices. The fan-out device includes one power component associated with each of the ports. Each power component provides connections between the power lines in the network capble and the ports of the fan-out device. The power components are used to power the devices on the network and to monitor the power lines for problems. Switching circuitry in the power components allows the fan-out device to isolate cable runs connected thereto that have shorts or other problems. The fan-out device preferably stores a device identification number that the controller transmits on all of the ports in response to a message received on one of the downstream ports. The controller also generates a signal on the top port that causes any device connected to the fan-out device via the top port to ignore the message. One embodiment of the fan-out device provides a hub that is transparent to Ethernet protocols while not introducing the jitter into the signals associated with the re-transmission and synchronization functions performed by conventional hubs.

Computer network adapted for industrial environments

A distributed system with an architecture based on synchronized clocks that provides accurate coordination of control functions. The distributed system includes a set of nodes coupled to a communication link. Each node has a clock which holds a real-world time. The nodes participate in a synchronization protocol on the communication link for synchronizing the real-world time in each clock. The architecture of the distributed system is such that the synchronization of control functionality in the distributed system is based upon the real-world time in the clocks. A variety of examples of applications for this architecture are set forth.

An apparatus and method for monitoring potentially-cumulative-trauma-syndrome-inducing activities by a wearer is provided. A wearable monitor and wireless transmitter are attached to a body part of the wearer. The monitor monitors activities of the body part of the wearer. The transmitter transmits signals from the monitor to a receiver. The receiver provides the transmitted signals to a processor, which analyzes the received signals and, in response to a determination that a pre-defined threshold has been exceeded, provides feedback to the wearer. The processor is connected via a local-area-network (LAN) connection to a local area-network. Ergonomics personnel can monitor the wearer and set the threshold remotely via the LAN and the LAN connection. Ergonomics personnel can also determine when the monitor is not being worn by the wearer. The monitor is adapted to resist disablement by the wearer.

Method and apparatus for monitoring of cumulative-trauma-syndrome-inducing activities

A system in which remote nodes are supplied with electrical power using existing network communication links. A communication device in a system according to the present techniques routes electrical power to a remote node via a set of unused lines of a network communication link used for communication with the remote node. The electrical power distributed to the remote node may be AC or DC power.
