The present invention relates to a process for stabilizing organic polymeric materials comprising incorporating therein a benzofuran (2) one or indolin (2) one compound as stabilizer. Such stabilized polymeric materials are stabilized against degradation during the polymer processing.

Compounds of formula I ##STR1## where R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are defined in the text, are useful as light stabilizers for polymeric materials, particularly for thermoplastic polymers and automotive finishes. Preferred compounds are those in which R.sub.1 is hydrogen and R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are identical (C.sub.8-17 alkyl)carbonyl groups.

4-Aminomethylpolyalkylpiperidines useful as light stabilizers

Compounds obtained by the addition of unsaturated esters to the &gt;NH group of compounds of formula II ##STR1## are useful as light stabilizers for polymeric materials, particularly for thermoplastic polymers and automotive finishes. Preferred compounds are those in which R, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are all hydrogen and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a cyclododecylidene ring.

1-Oxa-3,8-diazaspiro[4.5]decanes

N-(.beta.-aminoethyl)-3-hydroxy-1,1,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine and certain of its N- and O-substituted derivatives are useful as light stabilizers for polymeric materials, particularly for thermoplastic polymers and automotive finishes. Preferred compounds include the N-, O-diacyl derivatives.

The present invention relates to a process for stabilizing organic polymeric materials comprising incorporating therein a benzofuran(2)one compound or indolin(2)one compound containing at least two benzofuran(2)one or indolin(2)one nuclei.

3-Hydroxylbenzyl compounds of formula, ##STR1## in which each of R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 is a hydrocarbon group, e.g. alkyl, R.sub.4 is hydrogen or alkyl, or forms with R.sub.1 --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, and Z is either an oxygen- or sulphur-containing group featuring at least one ester or amide moiety, or a disubstituted amino group, Z being bound to the rest of the molecule via the oxygen or sulphur atom, or nitrogen atom, respectively, are useful as antioxidants. Organic materials which are susceptible to the degradative effects of oxygen are treated with one or more of such compounds, e.g. by incorporation into the body of the organic material, in order to be stabilized against such effects.

3-Hydroxybenzyl compounds useful as antioxidants

Carbonates and urethanes of 2,2'-alkylene or -cycloalkylene-bis-4,6-disubstituted phenols are useful for stabilizing organic materials against the degradative effects of oxygen.
