Superconductors having a high proportion of stabilization material are produced by first forming a composite member composed of pieces of stabilization material and rods of stabilization material containing cores of superconductive material and this composite member is deformed to reduce the cross section by extrusion and drawing. To increase the proportion of stabilization material, the composite material is subsequently introduced into an enveloping tube composed of stabilization material and the resulting assembly is deformed to final dimensions by means of further drawing processes. Breaks of the superconductive filaments are avoided by providing adequate amounts of stabilization material in the central region of the composite member. The result is that filament superconductors having a high proportion of stabilization material can be manufactured at a relatively low cost.

A method for manufacturing a superconducting hollow conductor, with superconducting conductor strands arranged in the interior of a tube through which coolant flows, which allows simple manufacture of long conductor sections, includes enclosing the helical conductor strands in a longitudinally welded tubular carrier body and subsequently drawing the carrier body to an inside diameter which is smaller than the original outside diameter of the helical conductor strands to obtain a mechanically strong conductor arrangement with a defined uniform flow cross-section for the coolant.

A stabilized super-conductor of the type containing a super-conductive region consisting of an intermetallic compound containing at least two elements, such as Nb.sub.3 Sn, and a normally-conductive region containing a material which is normally conductive during operational temperatures of the super-conductive region, such as Cu, with a diffusion-inhibiting layer, such as at least partially composed of Ta, positioned between the super-conductive and the normally-conductive regions is produced by providing a structure composed of a region of normally-conductive material and a region of super-conductive material, arranging a plurality of rod-shaped segments, at least some of which are composed of a diffusion-inhibiting material, between the normally conductive and the super-conductive regions and deforming the resultant structure one or more times, with intermediate annealing so as to attain a conductor having a desired reduced cross-section while causing the rod segments to combine with one another to form a diffusion-inhibiting layer.

A method and device for the manufacture of metal bands, particularly of an amorphous metal alloy is provided. The liquid alloy is deposited on a cooling body having a rapidly moving surface, upon which solidification into a metal band occurs. Concurrent with the cooling body surface movement, the cooling body and the melt stream are moved relative to one another at right angles to the direction of the melt stream. This additional movement allows utilization of the entire cooling body surface and not merely that in the plane of the melt stream.

In a superconducting composite conductor consisting of several strands with a superconductive intermetallic compound of at least two elements, and at least one strand of a thermally and electrically highly conductive stabilizing metal which is normally conducting at the operating temperature of the superconducting composite conductor, wherein the strands with the superconductive compound each contain a core of at least one higher melting point element of the compound, having, at least on its surface, a layer of the compound, embedded in an alloy of at least one lower melting point element of the compound and a carrier metal in the form of a cable, stranded wire or flat cable, the strand of the stabilizing metal is joined to the adjacent strands containing the superconductive compound by diffusion of at least one lower melting point element of the compound and contains at least one zone, which zone extends along the strand and is enclosed by a diffusion inhibiting layer.
