3-Demethylmevalonic acid derivatives of the formula I (.delta.-lactone) and Ia (corresponding dihydroxycarboxylic acid derivative) ##STR1## in which A-B, Z, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 have the indicated meanings, a process for the preparation of these compounds, their use as medicaments and pharmaceutical products are described.
