An antidrip edge composition of fine-powder glass formers, cellulosic polymer and water to which a mineral acid is added has a pot-life lengthener for the dispersion is subjected to vacuum and/or agitation and/or vibration to remove bubbles, upon application to a glass sheet, prevents escape of an alkali silicate solution forming a fire-resisting intervening layer between that glass sheet and another glass or plastic sheet applied thereto.

A fire resistant glass structure in which the intervening layer between the panes has a portion of its polyhydric organic compounds replaced by potassium water glass in a layer which consists primarily of sodium water glass. The replacement eliminates ultraviolet light sensitivity without reduction in the increase in the duration of fire resistance provided by the organic compound.

Process for contactless measurement of the electrical resistance (or of the electrical conductivity) of a preferably flat material (test material) in which an alternating current is capacitively coupled into the test material with the help of two coupling electrodes. The total impedance is measured at at least three different frequencies, and from that measurement, the stray capacitance between the two coupling electrodes, the coupling capacitance between the two coupling electrodes and the test material, as well as the resistance of the test material are determined. A glass pane has a pair of opposite faces and an outer edge and is held in a structural channel forming a groove by an adapter. The adapter is formed in part by respective metallic edge strips each having an inner portion overlying a respective face of the pane and an outer portion projecting outward therefrom and into the groove. The outer edge of the pane is spaced from the channel and lies wholly outside the groove. Inner portions of the strips are secured to the respective faces of the pane and a nonmetallic bar is secured between the outer portions of the edge strips and engaged in the groove. The strips are secured to the glass by an adhesive and each strip includes a perforate under strip adhered to the glass and an imperforate cover strip adhered atop the under strip. The adhesive has a silicone or water-glass base and is quite resistant to heat.

The drying of a hydrated alkali metal silicate aqueous solution on a substrate to produce a light-transmissive fire-resistant layer is carried out at a temperature of about 100.degree. C. in a drying chamber which is initially filled with water vapor. An operation of the water vapor is condensed and the atmosphere is replenished with helium, oxygen, nitrogen or a mixture thereof so that during the drying, the atmosphere consists at least 90% by volume of water vapor and one or more of these gases, the balance being nitrogen and/or argon and/or sulfur hexafluoride.

When a laminated light transmitting fire-screening panel is formed by sandwiching at least one layer of intumescent material between at least two plies of glazing material, there is a risk that air will be entrapped between the various plies as they are bonded together. In order to reduce such entrapment of air, the sandwich is assembled while there is present between the or each layer and any panel sheet element which is to be brought into contact therewith, an atmosphere which immediately prior to such contact consists at least in part of one or more materials which is more soluble in the intumescent material than is air, and the sandwich assembly is then subjected to heat and/or pressure to bond it together to form the laminate. Such more soluble material is preferably the vapor phase of a solvent for the intumescent material, for example water.

Method of forming a laminated fire screening panel

When water is removed from a body of wet intumescent material by heating it for a period of time during which water is allowed to evaporate, microbubbles tend to form in the resulting body during the later stages of drying and/or during aging of the body. In order to reduce this tendency, during at least a part of the heating period there is introduced into the atmosphere in contact with the intumescent material one or more gases which is less soluble in the intumescent material than is oxygen, and/or one or more gases which is the vapor phase of a solvent for the body. The most preferred solvent vapor is steam, and preferred less soluble gases include SF.sub.6, CF.sub.4, N.sub.2 and cyclohexane.

A process for forming a solid layer of intumescent material from a fluid material which comprises the steps of pouring the fluid material onto a mold and evaporating the liquid from the fluid material while the fluid material is contained within a chamber offering a predetermined restraint to the escape of vapor from the chamber to the ambient atmosphere.

A method of forming a layer of material from a solution containing the material and a solvent which comprises the steps of forming the solution into a layer, contacting at least one major face of the solution layer with a wall which is permeable over the area of that face substantially to the vapor phase only of the solvent, and effecting the escape of solvent simultaneously from both major faces of the layer including the one major face by vapor diffusion through the wall so as to set the layer.

Method of forming a layer of material from a solution

A fire-screening panel is provided that maintains its effectiveness in preventing fire propagation even after aging of the panel. The panel comprises a first structural ply formed from a vitreous sheet, and a second structural ply, with a layer of intumescent material disposed therebetween. Other plies may also be provided, and the plies are clamped together in face-to-face relationship, and/or bonded together. At least one ply of the panel has an infra-red reflecting coating disposed thereon, remote from the intumescent material, which coating provides for the retained effectiveness of the fire-propagating properties of the panel despite aging thereof.

A laminated light-transmitting fire-screening panel comprising two outer plies and at least one layer of intumescent material sandwiched between the outer plies of the panel, the arrangement being such that the layer occupies an area which is less than the area of at least one of the outer plies so as to define therewith a recess leading along at least a portion of the edge of the panel.
