A method and system are disclosed whereby a mobile phone user can select one or more service preferences for the mobile phone from a simulated mobile phone display on an Internet web page. The user can access the web page from a personal or business computer. Once the selection has been made, the user can save the preferences to a server in the mobile phone network. The server contains (or provides links to) the full complement of services that are available for selection. The selected services' applications are downloaded from the server to the mobile phone (via the network) either immediately (if a network connection is already made) or the next time the phone is turned on. Consequently, the user can readily obtain the services desired, and also customize the display and &ldquo;look and feel&rdquo; of the mobile phone.

A method for spatializing audio in conference calls is described in which the participants in the calls are placed in particular locations in order to provide an additional dimension (direction) so that the participants can better recognize who is speaking. Also, the dimension of volume is provided, which can be used in creating background sub-conferences. Consequently, sub-conferences can be conducted in which the participants can move seamlessly between them and also listen to other sub-conferences being conducted in the background.

A procedure in a remote server is accessed via a wireless telecommunications network. At least one Short Message Service message is produced, which message represents a command that, if applied to the server, will invoke the procedure. The at least one message is sent to the server via the wireless telecommunications network. At the server, the command is reproduced from the at least one message.

A method and system are disclosed in which an incoming call is routed to a service node with a World-Wide Web interface. In a preferred embodiment, responsive to an incoming call, an 'alert' software routine is executed in the service node, which sends an alert message to a Java software application residing in the called party's terminal (e.g., personal computer, etc.). The Java application causes a window to be displayed on the called party's terminal, which shows pertinent information about the calling party. The displayed window also contains 'buttons' that allow the called party to choose (at a minimum) whether to accept the call, reject the call, hold the call, or re-direct the call to another phone.
