A pellet for testing distal colonic and anorectal function. In one embodiment the pellet comprises a bag comprising the exterior of the pellet wherein the bag is comprised of a polymer that is reactive with a catalyst to form a more solid-like substance. In another embodiment, the pellet may comprise one of a grapheme layer, a wavelength transducer, or a magnetically attractive element. In another embodiment the pellet may comprise a telescopic extender and further comprise a telescope bad coupled to the telescopic extender.

Devices for testing distal colonic and anorectal function. In at least one embodiment of a device of the present disclosure, the device comprises a flexible central support, a first bag or balloon surrounding at least part of the flexible central support; and a first plurality of sensors positioned upon or embedded within a surface of the first bag or balloon, each of the first plurality of sensors positioned a known distance from each other; wherein the first plurality of sensors are configured to obtain pressure measurements on the surface of the first bag or balloon when the device is operated within a mammalian gastrointestinal tract.

In at least one embodiment of a device configured for insertion into a gastrointestinal tract of the present disclosure, the device comprises a core comprising a core material which is solid, semi-solid or compressible, one or more sensors embedded in an interior of the device and/or on a surface of the device, at least one of the one or more sensors configured to obtain a pressure measurement within the gastrointestinal tract and during defecation of the device, and a plurality of electrodes within or upon the device and configured to obtain impedance planimetric measurements within the gastrointestinal tract and during defecation of the device, the impedance planimetric measurements useful to determine cross-sectional areas.

Devices and systems to measure luminal organ parameters using impedance. In at least one embodiment of an impedance device of the present disclosure, the impedance device comprises an elongated body having a distal body end and a pair of detection electrodes positioned in between a pair of excitation electrodes located at or near the distal body end, the pair of detection electrodes configured to obtain one or more conductance values within a mammalian luminal organ within a field generated by the pair of excitation electrodes, wherein a measured parameter of the mammalian luminal organ can be calculated based in part upon the one or more conductance values obtained by the device and a known distance between the pair of detection electrodes.

Methods for measuring cross-sectional areas in luminal organs. In at least one embodiment of a method for measuring a size parameter of a targeted treatment site of the present disclosure, the method comprises the steps of introducing an impedance device into a treatment site, the impedance device selected from the group consisting of an impedance catheter and an impedance wire; injecting a first solution of a first compound having a first conductivity into the treatment site; measuring a first conductance value at the treatment site using the impedance device, the first conductance value indicative of a bolus of the first solution, and calculating a size parameter of the treatment site based in part upon the first conductivity of the first solution, the first conductance.

Methods for measuring cross-sectional areas in luminal organs

The invention comprises a system, catheter and method for measuring the cross-sectional areas and pressure gradients in any hollow organ, such as, for example, blood vessels. One embodiment of such a system includes: an impedance catheter capable of being introduced into a targeted site; a solution delivery source; a constant current source; a balloon inflation control device; and a data acquisition and processing system that receives conductance and/or pressure gradient data from the catheter and calculates the cross-sectional area of the targeted site. In one embodiment, the catheter has an inflatable balloon along its longitudinal axis, thereby enabling the breakup of any materials causing stenosis at the targeted site and/or distention and delivery of an optional stent into the targeted site.

System and method for measuring cross-sectional areas and pressure gradients in luminal organs

The present disclosure comprises a system, catheter and method for measuring the cross-sectional areas and pressure gradients in any hollow organ, such as, for example, blood vessels. One embodiment of such a method includes the steps of introducing an impedance catheter into a treatment site, providing electrical current flow to the treatment site, injecting a first solution and measuring a first conductance value, injecting a second solution and measuring a second conductance value, and calculating the cross-sectional area of the treatment site, in part, based on the first and second conductance values.
