A method of constructing a refractory brick lining on a bottom tuyere plate for a vessel for refining or otherwise treating a metal melt comprises the improvement of constructing the lining in an imperforate manner on the bottom tuyere plate and then drilling tuyere ducts in the lining. The brick lining is preferably constructed with the bottom tuyere plate in an upright position and the ducts are then drilled while the plate and the lining are still upright. The bottom tuyere plate is preferably mounted in an assembly frame which is itself pivotally mounted to enable the frame together with the bottom tuyere plate to be swung from a horizontal position to the upright position.

A process for producing steel in a convertor in which energy is supplied by introducing carbon containing materials into a pig iron melt in said convertor and oxygen is supplied to said melt, and the supply of carbon containing materials to said melt is discontinued when the carbon in said melt is not lower than 2%, and thereafter completing the refining of said melt with oxygen whereby the nitrogen content of the finished steel produced is lower than it would have been had the supply of carbon to said melt been continued to the end of refining.

A procedure is described for supplying thermal energy to a steel melt by burning a fuel in a melt containing at most 0.10% carbon, by means of oxygen. The method permits an increase in the scrap or other iron carriers, (ore, pellets, etc.) which can be processed. Apparatus for carrying out the process is also described.

This invention relates to a process for refining metals in a refining vessel, by means of a tuyere embedded in the bottom or sidewall of the vessel and through which a refining gas is blown into the vessel. The tuyere is composed of at least three concentric pipes, the refining gas being made to pass through the central pipe and a protective medium being made to pass into the vessel through the spaces between the pipes which surround the central pipe. All of the pipes except the outermost pipe which is fixedly embedded in the refractory lining of the vessel, are individually movable longitudinally into the vessel.

Tuyere for metallurgical vessels

A method of casting steel at a lower overheated temperature during continuous casting, wherein the inner surface of a tundish is heated to a temperature which approximately corresponds to the temperature of the steel in a ladle, the tundish is filled with steel, and the steel is poured into at least one mold. According to the invention a discharge spout of the tundish which opens above the reference level of the metal bath, prior to casting and during heating of the tundish is brought into a position which occupies the lowest point of the inner surface of the tundish, the heating of the tundish is continued until adjusting an approximately stationary thermal gradient between the inner and the outer surfaces of the tundish, and prior to pouring of the steel into the mold the tundish is brought into its casting position. The tundish for the pouring of steel during continuous casting comprises a substantially troughlike lower portion and a domed cover member, at least one bottom nozzle provided for the tundish lower portion, said cover member being provided with an opening for the pouring in of the steel melt from a ladle, and a heating device is arranged above the reference bath level of the tundish. The tundish has a lining possessing a heat conductivity resistance of at least 0.25 m.sup.2.h. .degree.C/Kcal, and is further provided with a discharge spout partially possessing a substantially tubular-shaped cross-section and opening above the reference level of the metal bath. There is also provided means for displacing the tundish about a horizontal axis.

Method for pouring steel during continuous casting

Immersion lances for refining metal melts in hearth type vessels including open hearth and electric furnaces. The lances are movable into and out of the metal melt and comprise an oxygen pipe, a cooling medium pipe surrounding the oxygen pipe and a refractory casing which is wear resistant, temperature resistant and chemically resistant to the operating surroundings. The process of refining using such lances is also described.
