Aqueous ammonium thiocyanate solutions are prepared continuously by reaction of ammonia with carbon disulfide in the presence of water using activated carbon as catalyst at pressures of from 2 to 7 bar. In this way, a very pure product can be obtained. The process can be carried out at very low cost, because both the addition of ammonia to carbon disulfide and the decomposition of the resulting ammonium dithiocarbamate can be carried out in a reactor in one step under identical conditions.

The invention relates to laminates comprising at least one layer of an intractable, fully aromatic polyimide which, on one side, is directly bonded to a layer of a substrate and, on the other side, to a layer of a heat-sealable polyimide. The basic elements thus produced may be bonded to one another on the heat-sealable polyimide sides or one basic element may be bonded to another layer of substrate. Further layers may be bonded to one or both outside(s) of the laminates. The laminates may be produced by a novel temperature-controlled process. The substrates are preferably foils of metals or alloys. The multilayer laminates obtained are distinguished by outstanding mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. They may be used as reinforcing materials or for printed electrical circuits.

Water-containing water glass fibers are disclosed, substantially free from non-alkaline compounds and having a water content of from about 15 to 30% by weight, a tear strength of from about 5 to 30 cN/tex, a ratio of alkaline oxide to silicon dioxide of from about 1:3 to 1:1.9, an amorphous structure and a density of from about 2 g/cm.sub.3 to 2.5 g/cm.sup.3. The fibers are preferably cut into lengths of from 1 to 40 mm. They may be used for subsequent production of silica fibers, a technique more advantageous than producing the latter from a melt containing SiO.sub.2 or by acid-leaching of glass fibers. The silica fibers are useful for producing wet webs, filter linings and reinforcing material.

Preparation of trans cyclohexane,1,4-diisocyanate and related compounds

Thermoplastically workable polyurethane-elastomers are disclosed which are obtained through polyaddition of substantially pure trans-cyclohexane-1,4-diisocyanate, macrodiols of average molecular weight from 800 to 4000 and bisethoxylated Bisphenol A or mixtures thereof with short-chain diols customarily employed as chain lengtheners. The polyurethanes possess the advantage that their softening points lie in a very favorable temperature range which makes possible their thermoplastic workability at below the decomposition temperature, and also guarantees outstanding mechanical-elastic characteristics as well as excellent long-term light stability. As a result the polyurethanes according to the present invention are outstandingly suitable as material for shaped bodies to be employed in areas of use placing high requirements on the employed materials. For example, highly valuable elastomer fibers can be manufactured from these polyurethanes by means of melt spinning.

The diamide is chlorinated to form trans-cyclohexane-1,4-dicarboxylic acid-bis-N-chloramide. The latter compound is then converted into a (a) trans-cyclohexane-1,4-diamine with an alkali metal hydroxide or alkaline earth metal hydroxide; or into a (b) a trans-cyclohexane-1,4-diurethane by reaction with an alcohol or glycol in a reaction mixture containing an alkali metal hydroxide or alkaline earth metal hydroxide; or into (c) a trans-cyclohexane-1,4-diurea by reaction with a primary or secondary amine in a reaction mixture containing an alkali metal hydroxide or alkaline earth metal hydroxide; or into a (d) trans-cyclohexane-1,4-sulphonyl urea by reaction with a primary sulphonamide in a reaction mixture containing an alkali metal hydroxide and dimethyl formamide and water.
