The apparatus for axially slidably positioning a plurality of roll bearing supports guided in the housiing windows of the stands of a mill comprises a plurality of guide members each mounted in at least one rigid supporting frame and each pivotable about an axle oriented transversely to the roll axle direction, at least two traversing carriages guided in at least two of the guide members which are each drivable by a drive motor and coupling means for releasable engagement or linkage of each of the traversing carriages with an associated roll bearing support. One of the supporting frames of a supporting frame pair with frame planes arranged substantially perpendicular to the rolling plane and substantially parallel to each other is mounted on each stand of a stand pair in the rolling mill and the coupling means of the traversing carriages of one and another of the guide members are connectable with a side of one of the roll bearing supports facing that traversing carriage or supporting frame.

A roll stand having a roll centered on an axis and provided at one end with a journal block is provided with a roll-shifting apparatus which comprises an outer frame fixed relative to the stand at the journal block, a pair of arms extending parallel to one another and having outer ends pivoted on the outer frame at a common arm axis generally perpendicular to the roll axis and inner arms adjacent the block, and actuators engaged between the inner arm ends and the outer frame for vertically displacing the inner arm ends with pivoting of the arms about the arm axis to a position with the inner arm ends generally level with the journal block. An inner frame slides perpendicular to the arm axis on the arms and carries a grab mount pivotal about an inner axis parallel to the arm axis. A grab carried on the mount is axially couplable with the journal block. Another actuator, once again typically a heavy-duty double-acting hydraulic ram, has an inner end pivoted at the arm axis on the outer frame and an outer end pivoted on the inner frame for sliding the frame along the arms and thereby axially displacing the roll coupled to the grab.

Apparatus for axially shifting rolls in a roll stand

A changing apparatus for a standard six-high rolling stand comprises a changing carriage having a pair of similar full-set holders each provided with two vertically spaced working-roll supports and two vertically spaced backup-roll supports flanking the respective working-roll supports. These supports are vertically spaced like the respective rolls in the stand. Thus a full set of two working and two backup rolls can be held in either of the holders. The changing carriage can be displaced between upstream and downstream positions to axially align with the rolls in the stand. A loading carriage has a working-roll holder with two vertically spaced working-roll supports and a backup-roll holder with two vertically spaced backup-roll supports, the carriage being displaceable into a position with the working-roll supports of the working-roll holder aligned with the working-roll supports of one of the full-set holders and a position with the backup-roll supports of the backup-roll holder aligned with the backup-roll supports of the one full-set holder. The rolls can be axially shifted from the loading carriage holders into the one full-set holder, rolls are then axially shifted from the stand into the other full-set holder, and rolls in the one full-set holder are shifted into the roll stand.
