A process for the manufacture of a continuous press shell that is liquid-tight and smoothed on its inside, and which can be used as a press element in a dewatering press is provided. The press shell consists of a continuous wire belt which on its outside is coated with a plastic. Upon the smoothing of its outside, the coated press shell is turned, so that for the use of the press shell its smoothed surface will be on its inside. For turning the press shell, the one continuous edge of the press shell is first turned inward and attached to a traction device. Next, an adjoining and as yet unturned section of the press shell is held back on its outside, by means of vacuum, on a fixed guide device. Lastly, the traction device, along with the edge of the press shell attached to it, is pulled through the interior of the press shell.

A press roll for a web includes a support body which is either stationary or rotatable and a press shell which is rotatable over the support body and against a mating roll. A respective shell support element or disc is disposed axially outward of both ends of the support body and the support element has an axially outward, face side. The flexible, liquid impervious endless belt press shell has lateral edge zones. Each edge zone has a respective plurality of outwardly projecting tongues and has cutouts between neighboring tongues. The edge zone is turned radially inward and its tongues are each respectively mounted on a holding element projecting from the face side of the shell support element. Centering elements also ono the face side of the shell support element are placed each for extending into and contacting the base of the cutouts between neighboring tongues for positioning the tongues.

Mounting a press shell to a press roll for dewatering a web

A long-nip press roll and a mating roll form an areal press nip with each other. The long-nip press roll has a flexible tubular press shell which is mounted by means of two support disks on a stationary support member which extends through the inside of the press shell. Within a hydraulic pressure chamber provided on the supporting member is a radially displaceable press shoe which can press the press shell against the mating roll. Support member, pressure chamber and mating roll are arranged symmetrically relative to a press plane. The slide surface of the press shoe which contacts the press shell is arranged offset with respect to the press plane in the direction opposite the direction of travel of the press shell. The axis of rotation of the press shell and its two support disks is also arranged offset out of the press plane in the direction opposite the direction of travel of the press shell.

A long nip press roll for removing water from a traveling fiber web. A rigid support beam has at least one recess in its periphery for receiving a radially movable hydraulically operated press shoe. A flexible tubular press shell is wrapped around the support beam and the press shoe. The concave outer surface of the press shoe presses the press shell against a backing roll for pressing upon a fiber web against a felt belt passing through the nip. The press shell has a smooth outer surface in contact with the web. At its outlet side from the press nip, the press shoe has a convexly curved guide surface over which the press shell and the paper web travel together and that guide surface is also wrapped for a distance by the felt belt. This separates the web from the felt belt and the web travels around on the press shell. A ledge inside the press shell and/or a removal roll at the outside of the press shell separate the web from the outside of the press shell. Plural press shoes defining plural press nips may be provided.

Long nip press roll arrangement

A long nip press roll includes a stationary support member and a flexible, tubular, inflatable press shell which is supported to rotate around the support member by axially separated support discs rotatable around the support member. A radially displaceable press shoe is supported on the support member for pressing outward against the press shell against a counter roll in the press plane. To enable the press roll to be used in a press where it is disposed either beneath or above the counter roll, all of the internal lines in the support member, e.g. those for the supply and discharge of pressure oil, lubricant and cooling oil and press shell pressurizing air, include two sets of coupling for coupling them to external lines, a respective set of the couplings being located at each axial end of the press roll. During assembly, one of the sets of couplings at one end is connected to external lines, and the other set of couplings is closed.

A press roll for a web comprises a support body which is either stationary or rotatable and comprises a press shell which is rotatable over the support body and against a mating roll. A respective shell support element or disc is disposed axially outward of both ends of the support body and the support element has an axially outward, face side. The flexible, liquid impervious endless belt press shell has lateral edge zones. Each edge zone has a respective plurality of outwardly projecting tongues and has cutouts between neighboring tongues. The edge zone is turned radially inward and its tongues are each respectively mounted on a holding element projecting from the face side of the shell support element. Centering elements also on the face side of the shell support element are placed each for extending into and contacting the base of the cutouts between neighboring tongues for positioning the tongues.

Press roll for dewatering a web

A piston-cylinder arrangement, particularly useful for the press shoe of an extended nip press. The cylinder is a fluid pressure cylinder with a piston, which is fluid pressure reciprocated, disposed in the cylinder chamber. The cylinder and piston are polygonal around their peripheries. A circumferential groove in the cylinder wall carries a plurality of sealing pieces which are urged outwardly of the groove and against the periphery of the piston. The sealing pieces comprise corner pieces disposed at the corners of the polygonal cylinder and second sealing pieces joining the corner pieces. Where the corner and second sealing pieces meet around the periphery of the cylinder, they have overlying, overlapping surfaces that are oriented perpendicular to the reciprocation of the piston. A spring in the groove may urge some of the pieces outwardly toward the piston. Particular beveling or rounding of the slide surfaces of the sealing pieces and a particular thickness of the sealing pieces with respect to the groove are described.

A press roll for acting in opposition to a counter roll. The press roll has a support member which is supported at its opposite ends. The support member is stationary in certain most embodiments and rotatable in one embodiment. A flexible, liquid-tight endless press jacket is wrapped around the support member. At each lateral end of the press roll, the press jacket is fastened to the outward end of a supporting disk, which is rotatably mounted on the support member. The lateral edge zones of the press jacket are both deformed radially inwardly around the outside of the respective supporting disks and each edge zone is clamped there by a annular clamping flange. To facilitate deformation of the edge zones, at least one of the edge zones terminates in a series of tongues separated by cutouts arrayed around the roll. Coiled tension springs engage the edge zone and/or the tongues to pull them in the direction toward the axis of the roll.

The belt press unit of a paper machine includes an elastic tubular press belt which passes around the circumference of and is spaced from the surface of a hollow, annular supporting body. A press shoe in the supporting body presses outwardly and urges the press belt against an opposing surface on a mating roller for defining a press nip. Circumferentially outside of the press zone, each of a plurality of circumferentially spaced guide ledges extends across the direction of travel of the belt. A torsionally rigid beam extends through and is attached at two axially spaced locations along the hollow of the annular supporting body. At least one of the guide ledges is supported to the beam, whereby radial deflection of the supporting body does not result in radial deflection of the beam and thus does not cause radial shifting of the guide ledge. The beam is axially displaceable with respect to the supporting body. The ledge is supported on stay bolts which are guided by wedge-shaped supporting surfaces on the beam. These surfaces shift the stay bolts and thereby shift the ledges radially as the beam shifts axially with respect to the supporting body.

A supporting device for a strainer belt in a paper making apparatus of the type including a plurality of wear strips which, in use, are disposed transversely to the strainer belt, each of the strips having a wear surface on which the belt is supported as it passes over them. Each of the wear strips is adapted to be clamped on a supporting element between a leaf spring and a retaining plate, which are secured to the supporting element, said strip having a bearing surface which rests on the bearing surface of the support element. The wear strip has a symmetrical shape so that the wear surface and bearing surface may be disposed interchangeably either to face the strainer belt or to face the bearing surface of the support element.

A drying apparatus for wet paper webs which employs a rotary drum having a foraminous cylindrical wall and being located between but spaced apart from two parallel drying rolls with foraminous or impermeable cylindrical walls. The major part of the drum is surrounded by a hotair hood, and an endless wire screen is trained over the rolls as well as over that part of the drum which is surrounded by the hood. The screen forms a loop which surrounds a stationary suction chamber extending into the space between the rolls and having an open side facing the drum as well as the spaces between the drum and the rolls. The suction chamber has one or more sealing strips which are closely adjacent to the screen upstream of the first roll (as considered in the direction of transport of a web) and downstream of the second roll. The leader of the web is threaded between the screen and the first roll, thereupon around the drum between the screen and the hood, and finally between the screen and the second roll.
