A coalescence separator comprises a tank with an inlet for an oil-water mixture. In the upper area of the tank, a drain is arranged for the oil collected in the tank. In the lower area of the tank, a drain is arranged for the water accumulating in the tank. The water drain is provided with an ascending pipe which ends below the oil drain. A changeable coalescence element is arranged on the bottom side of the tank and is associated with the ascending pipe through a guide body which prevents swirls in a chamber of the tank above the coalescence element. The coalescence element is easily exchanged by removal from either the upper end of the tank or from below by way of a screw mounting.

A process is described for producing filter elements which contain a cross-wound yarn as the filter material, wherein twisted yarn of fine individual fibers is roughened to enhance its filtering action. The yarn may be heat-resistant and the filter element may be used as a soot filter in the exhaust gas stream of an internal combustion engine. Before the yarn is wound up, fiber tufts are broken up by pulling the yarn under tension over a moving roughening surface, the direction of movement of the roughening surface differing by an angle alpha from the direction of movement of the yarn in the area of contact between the yarn and the roughening surface, and the angle alpha being selected in relation to the twist of the yarn, particularly so that the threads of the yarn in contact with the roughening surface are oriented transversely to the direction of movement of the roughening surface. The process produces a roughened yarn which provides the required high filter performance for a soot filter.

An oil-separating air filter assembly having a separator element arranged in a closed filter cartridge, the lower axial end cover of which has a female thread by means of which the filter cartridge can be screwed against the upper end face of a separator head. The latter carries a centrally located threaded sleeve and a standpipe forming part of the air outlet channel, the accumulated oil being drained through an annular gap between the sleeve and the standpipe. The air inlet channel is arranged radially outside the center of the separator head, having an annular channel portion in the separator head facing a plurality of inlet passages in the end cover of the filter cartridge.

A method of removing soot from the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines, especially of the diesel-type, using an exhaust filter which collects the soot and a dosing device which, when triggered by a pressure switch and a series-connected temperature switch, injects a dose of a combustion-inducing substance onto the soot layer with the aid of compressed air. The combustion-inducing substance consists of CuCl and NH.sub.4 NO.sub.3 which are stored as a mixture in a single container or as separate ingredients in two containers.

A method and device for removing soot from the exhaust gases of a diesel-type internal combustion engine, using a soot filter in the exhaust line and a dosing device which injects a dose of a combustion-inducing substance, for example CuCl, into the soot filter by means of compressed air. The soot-combusting process is initiated automatically, in response to a critical exhaust pressure level and the simultaneous presence of a suitable temperature in the soot filter, using a pressure switch and a series-connected thermal switch. Compressed air, flowing through a bypass line, scavenges the supply line of the combustion-inducing substance, while supplying additional oxygen for the soot combustion process.

An air intake filter for internal combustion engines designed to prevent the escape of fuel fumes to the atmosphere, the filter cartridge including a rectangular block-shaped filter body folded of filter paper with horizontal top and bottom fold edges, the fold cavities on the downstream side of the cartridge being filled with activated carbon which is retained by a cover layer of fiber fleece. The outer edges of the filter body and of the cover layer are embedded in a resilient sealing collar. The longitudinal extremities of the fold cavities are closed by fold pockets.

A soot filter arrangement for an exhaust gas flow of an internal combustion engine, especially an air-compressing internal combustion engine. The filter arrangement includes a housing with feed and discharge connections for the exhaust gas stream in a mineral filter material arranged in the housing. The material is provided on a support pipe equipped with passage openings which enable the exhaust gas stream to enter the support pipe in a radial direction and leave the same in an axial direction. Several support pipes are provided at a mutual spacing in a parallel relationship and the filter material includes a thread of spun silicon dioxide fibers wound onto the support pipes.

A separator device for removing the oil from an oil-carrying air stream, the device comprising two concentrically spaced oil separator elements which are mounted inside a cylindrical housing in such a way that the air stream is forced successively through a coarse filter body and a fine filter body, where the oil droplets are trapped and collected, accumulating inside the spaced bottom covers of the two separator elements. Separate oil suction pipes serve to remove the accumulated oil from the device.
