A vulcanizable rubber composition is disclosed that includes (a) a rubber component selected from natural rubber, synthetic rubber or combinations thereof; (b) a methylene donor; and (c) a methylene acceptor which is the addition product of (1) at least one of the compounds including a dihydric phenol, a polyhydric phenol, a dihydric phenolic resin or a polyhydric phenolic resin, and (2) at least one of the compounds including a mono oxirane compound, an alkylene carbonate having from about 2 to 18 carbon atoms, or a poly oxirane compound. The addition product of this invention is a hydroxylalkyl aryl ether having from about 25 to 85 percent of the hydroxyl groups of the di- or polyhydric phenol or the dior polyhydric phenolic resin unreacted. A reinforced rubber article is also provided.

Novel biocides employing resorcinol derivatives

Synthetic base oils for functional fluids and greases are provided comprising a mixture of monoalkylated naphthalenes and polyalkylated naphthalenes, said naphthalenes represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein the R' groups are independently selected from H and methyl, the monoalkylated naphthalenes have three R groups which are H and one R group which is a 12-26 carbon alkyl, the polyalkylated naphthalenes have from two to four R groups which are 12-26 carbon alkyl and any remainder R groups H, and the weight ratio of monoalkylated naphthalenes to polyalkylated naphthalenes is from 5:95 to 70:30 when the average alkyl group is C.sub.12 -C.sub.16 and from 5:95 to 99:1 when the average alkyl group is C.sub.17 -C.sub.26. In the preferred mixture, the polyalkylated naphthalenes have a numerical ratio of .alpha./.beta. substitution of from 50/50 to 10/90 when the R' groups are both H.

Rust preventives are provided comprising divalent metal salts of the formula: ##STR1## wherein the R groups are independently selected from methyl, hydrogen, and decyl of the formula: ##STR2## wherein n=0 to 3; and wherein from two to three R groups are decyl, zero to two R groups are methyl, and zero to two R groups are hydrogen; and M is a divalent metal selected from Mg, Ca, Ba, and Zn. Useful intermediates for preparing the said rust preventives are also provided.

Unreacted sulfuric acid contained in a disulfonic acid product of an aromatic hydrocarbon that is produced from the reaction of the aromatic hydrocarbon or the mono-sulfonic acid of the aromatic hydrocarbon with a strong sulfonating agent is removed from the disulfonic acid product by reacting the sulfuric acid with additional aromatic hydrocarbon to produce the mono-sulfonic acid of the aromatic compound. The disulfonic acid product of the aromatic hydrocarbon containing sulfuric acid is reacted with the aromatic hydrocarbon at a molar ratio of aromatic hydrocarbon to sulfuric acid in the range of about 0.25 to around 2 and at a temperature in the range of 130.degree. to 200.degree. C. to obviate the need to remove any water formed during the course of the reaction.

Polyalkylbenzene hydroperoxides are prepared from a homogeneous solution at increased rates in the presence of sulfolane from polyalkylbenzenes which are poorly soluble or insoluble in sulfolane by preoxidizing the polyalkylbenzene to an oxidation level of at least 10 percent and less than 55 percent. Then the sulfolane is added and a homogeneous solution is formed and oxidation is continued to produce a hydroperoxide product at increased rates and to excellent conversions.
