The invention concerns a transparent polyamide alloy, produced by compounding it from 30-98% by weight of a transparent, amorphous, rigid and brittle polyamide A with at least 35 mole % cyclo-aliphatic diamine and a glass transition point of at least 150&deg; C., and 2-70% by weight of a transparent, impact resistant polyamide B with at least 40-80 mole % of at least one long-chain polyamide-forming monomer, with more than 10 carbon atoms and at least 10 mole % terephthalic acid and a glass transition point of under 70&deg; C.

Impact resistant transparent polyamide alloys

Colorless, amorphous, transparent copolyamides, their blends or alloys, and molded articles with high alternate bending strengths that can be produced from them. The copolyamides are preferably made of cycloaliphatic diamines combined with aliphatic dicarboxylic acids and small amounts of aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The copolyamides exhibit high strength, high rigidity, high heat distortion, and good solvent resistance.

An uncoated lens, especially for use as the lens of a fog light or a headlight for an automobile, and having particularly good resistance against the environmental effects which are inherent in this environment, is formed of a colorless, transparent copolyamide having a glass transition temperature of at least a 170.degree. C., blended with a homopolyamide, and wherein the copolyamide is formed from at least one cycloaliphatic diamine with two cyclohexane rings, and at least one aromatic dicarboxylic acid which is predominantly isophthalic acid. The copolyamide may optionally contain up to 20 mol % of a further polyamide forming monomer of at least one lactam or an omega-aminocarboxylic acid. The homopolyamide is preferably one of PA6, PA11, PA12, PA66, PA69, PA610 or PA612. The cycloaliphatic diamine of the copolyamide is preferably bis(3-methyl-4-aminocyclohexyl)-methane.

Advantageously, up to about 15 mole percent of the at least one aromatic dicarboxylic acid can be replaced by a long-chain aliphatic dicarboxylic acid having 9 to 36 carbon atoms.

A thermoplastic polyamide comprising a copolyamide which is the reaction product of a hexamethylene diamine unsubstituted or substituted with at least one alkyl group, and a bis(4-aminocyclohexyl) alkane which is substituted adjacent to the amino groups, and a dicarboxylic acid. Molded bodies made therefrom have high rigidity and tensile strength over a broad temperature range, low water uptake, high dimensional stability, low permeability to oxygen, and high distortion temperatures. They are particularly suitable for injection molding and extrusion particularly when they are modified to improved impact strength, especially for the preparation of thin walled or large surface area shapes.

Impact resistant polyamide compositions

A thermoplastic polyamide comprising a copolyamide and a modified copolyolefin. The copolyamide is the reaction product of a hexamethylene diamine, which may be substituted with one or more alkyl groups, and a his (4-aminocyclohexyl) alkane which is substituted adjacent to the amino groups, and a dicarboxylic acid. Molded bodies made therefrom have high rigidity, excellent impact resistance over a broad temperature range, low water uptake, high dimensional stability, low permeability to oxygen, and high shape retention on heating. They are particularly suitable for injection molding and extrusion, especially for the preparation of thin walled or large surface area shapes.
