Thermoplastic plasticized polyvinylbutyral molding compositions, in particular films of improved tensile strength and reduced tackiness are prepared by acetalization of polyvinyl alcohol, capable of association, in the associated state with n-butyraldehyde in aqueous phase in the presence of an acid catalyst and, if appropriate, of an organic sulfonic acid having an emulsifying action, after-treatment of the polyvinylbutyral under acetalization conditions at an elevated temperature in the presence of an organic sulfonic acid having 8 to 30 C atoms and having an emulsifying action, isolation and/or purification of the polyvinylbutyral and, if appropriate, admixture of conventional additives and mixing of the product, which may have been dried, with up to 40% by weight of plasticizer, relative to the polymer/plasticizer mixture, and molding, the plasticizers employed being esters of phthalic acid with C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 -alcohols and/or esters of adipic acid with C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 -alcohols. Use of the films for the manufacture of laminated glass, and laminated glass containing the films as the joining layer.

Ceramic green films having advantageous isotropic distribution of the inorganic pigment can be obtained by casting and drying a slip containing finely divided inorganic pigment, organic solvents, polyvinylbutyral, plasticizer and dispersing agent if compounds which contain in their molecules at least one structural unit of the formula Z ##STR1## in which A and B, which must be different, stand for either the oxyalkylene unit --C.sub.3-4 H.sub.6-8 O-- or the oxyalkylene unit --C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O-- and x and y, which can be identical or different, each denote a number from 1 to 200, are used as dispersing agents. Ceramic green films produced according to the invention can be converted to isotropic ceramic substrates by subsequent heat treatment and sintering.

Polyvinylbutyral of reduced tackiness and improved tensile strength is prepared by acetalization of polyvinyl alcohol, which is capable of association, in the associated state with n-butyraldehyde in aqueous phase in the presence of an acid catalyst. In the process for its preparation from more highly saponified, associated polyvinyl alcohol having a vinyl acetate unit content of less than 1% by weight, the acetalization is started preferably at temperatures below 20.degree. C. and the temperature is raised to above 40.degree. C. in the course of the reaction. Use for the production of plasticized thermoplastic polyvinylbutyral films and use of the latter as the joining layer in laminated glass.

The invention relates to finely divided polyvinyl acetal which is prepared in the form of an aqueous suspension or, if desired, in powder form, preferably having average particle sizes from 0.5 to 10 .mu.m, from polyvinyl alcohol and at least one aliphatic aldehyde having at least 3 carbon atoms, and which contains 0.1 to 10% by weight, based on polyvinyl acetal, of a completely or partially hydrolyzed vinyl ester copolymer grafted onto polyethylene oxide or polyethylene oxide derivatives and acetalized in the mixture with the polyvinyl alcohol. The tendency to blocking of polymer sheets can be reduced by means of anti-blocking agents. Suitable anti-blocking agents in transparent polyvinyl butyral sheets are especially montanic acid esters, which do not adversely affect the adhesion of the sheet to glass. The polyvinyl butyral sheets are used as interlayers of laminated glass (safety glass).

The preparation of polyvinylbutyral is commonly effected by the acetalization of polyvinyl alcohol with n-butyraldehyde, either in an organic solvent or in water. By varying the reaction conditions it is possible to obtain the polyvinylbutyral in a coarse-grain or fine-grained form. The production of polyvinylbutyral having improved properties is possible by using a polyvinylbutyral having a content of from 17 to 24% by weight of vinyl alcohol units as starting material for an after-treatment in the presence of an organic sulfonic acid having an emulsifying effect. The polyvinylbutyral obtained is particularly suitable for the manufacture of compound sheets.

Plasticizer containing polyvinylbutyral sheets are known intermediate layers for glass laminates. Generally, the polyvinylbutyral used for this application contains certain amounts of vinyl alcohol units and vinyl acetate units. In order to adjust an optimum adhesion to glass, certain additives are mixed with the polyvinylbutyral, which additives must not cause discoloration of the laminate and deterioration of the transparency. Betains are especially suitable anti-adhesives, and efficient in very small amounts.
