The present invention relates to a method and an arrangement for superimposing an image on a direct image of the surroundings in order to be displayed to an observer ( ). To generate the image which is to be superimposed on the direct image of the surroundings use is made of a line transmitter ( ) for transmitting two-dimensional image information in linear form and a converter ( ) for converting the image information in linear form into a two-dimensional image. The line transmitter ( ) is located in a different direction from the image of the surroundings of the observer, and a direction-changing means ( ) is arranged so as to angle the radiation from the line transmitter in a direction towards the eyes ( ) of the observer ( ). According to the invention the converter ( ) is separate from the line transmitter and arranged in proximity to the direction-changing means.

Method and arrangement for superimposing an image on a direct image of the surroundings in order to be displayed to an observer

A method of presenting a complete image on the retina of an observer, wherein the image is comprised of a large number of pixels located along mutually adjacent lines. The presentation is effected by deflecting a limited number of pixels shown on a display over the image-perceiving area of a retina, wherein these pixels represent consecutively all pixels in the image. According to the invention, the display shows the pixels in at least one band of a limited number of complete lines in the image. The lines in the band are generated parallel with one another and such that each line represents successively the pixels in all lines of the image or a part-image. The band is deflected as a unit over the image-perceiving area of the retina in time with the generation of the lines on the display. The invention also relates to a system for use when carrying out the method.

The invention relates to a display arrangement for displaying a three-dimensional image to an observer. The arrangement comprises a first display element (D.sub.1) arranged at a distance from the observer and a second display element (D.sub.2) arranged in the field of view between the observer (OB) and the first display element (D.sub.1) in the immediate vicinity of the observer. To produce a complete volume image in three dimensions, the image volume is sampled during a time interval corresponding to the typical integration time of the observer. After processing, the sample information is utilized partly in the first display element (D.sub.1) for displaying a first subset of image information included in the three-dimensional image and partly in the second display element (D.sub.2) for displaying a second subset of image information included in the three-dimensional image.
