An apparatus for enclosing objects, for example, candies, with a sheet of packaging material has a tube forming and guiding apparatus. To tightly fit the tube to the objects, an elastic collar is arranged at the end of the tube forming and guiding apparatus in the shape of a funnel and under tension, so that the collar presses the tube against the objects and forces superfluous packaging material into an overlap of the packaging material edges.

The invention relates to an apparatus for the continuous forming of high density, seamless candies from a strand of confectionary material provided with a viscous filling. Candy blanks are first cut from an incoming soft strand and then pressed into candy pieces of the desired shape. The apparatus includes cooperative complementally formed pairs of separating teeth as well as pairs of members for shaping the candy and stamping chambers arranged in a rotating rotor.

The invention relates to an apparatus for stamping candy bits from a string of confectionary material and comprises coacting rotating members, which are disposed eccentric to each other and arranged to squeeze or cut bits of confection from the string and immediately upon the bit being formed, oppositely disposed stamping elements are introduced into the path of travel of the bit to shape it prior to its being discharged from the apparatus.

A lightweight container for foodstuffs or the like, formed from a multi-layer composite material, typically a sandwich of metal and synthetic plastic foil. A dish-shaped base member and a cover are thermally joined or welded at respective flanges. The cover is provided with weakening score lines which define an area which is to be removed by fracturing the cover material along the score lines when a tab, contiguous with a part of the cover, is pulled up. Each partial section of the tear-open cover has such a tab which is intended to be grasped with the fingers of one hand. The tabs themselves are not joined to the base member of the container and may, in fact, protrude out of the plane of the cover when the container is sealed. The hermetic seal in the region of the free-standing tabs is assured by a platelet, which may be made of the same material as that from which the container is made, but which may have a different composition. This platelet is welded to the inside of the cover, substantially congruent with the region of the starting tabs. To open the package, one of the tabs is grasped and pulled up, resulting in fracture of the material of the cover along the weakening score lines, permitting removal of the associated part of the cover. The procedure is then repeated, if necessary, for removal of any remaining parts of the cover.

An apparatus for closing and sealing filled containers with a lid includes instrumentalities for positioning an individual lid beneath a sealing die which has an underside. The lid is temporarily held and finally joined to a container under the influence of heat and pressure. Suction is used to hold the lid against the underside of the die while it is being joined to the container. A plurality of protuberances are disposed at the underside of the sealing die. Each of the protuberances has an oblique surface. Each oblique surface has a point lying nearest a sealing surface defining an area of the underside, the area thus defined being substantially equal to that of the lid. Each lid can be consequently positioned correctly on a container and becomes fused therewith.
