In a forging machine, each ram is the piston or cylinder of a piston-cylinder hydraulic unit and the other component of the unit is attached to the forging machine frame and can be moved to adjust the ram stroke position. The piston or cylinder which constitutes the ram is guided directly in the machine frame to minimize play in the guidance of the ram component.

Forging machine

A forging machine having rams arranged in the form of a cross carry respective tools adjustable transversely to the ram axes and partly overlapping one another, so that a closed pass can be formed for any size of the forging pass. To adjust the tools transversely, each tool is carried on a respective crosspiece which can be clamped against the ram end or can be released and moved transversely on the ram. The clamping and releasing and the adjustment movement are all effected by a rotary tie rod extending through the crosspiece and through the ram, having one end coupled to the crosspiece for clamping it and moving it transversely to the ram, and the other end coupled to a clamping mechanism and to a rotary adjustment drive.

In a forging machine which has four radial rams with respective tools together forming a closed bite, each tool overlaps one adjacent tool and is overlapped by the other adjacent tool, and can be adjusted laterally relative to the radial ram axis, in the operating plane of the rams and tools, for setting the bite size.

In a forging press of underfloor construction, the vertically travelling frame has a lower crosshead which fits around and is guided on a hollow guide shaft which projects downwards from the table crosshead or platten of the press. The hollow guide shaft serves also as the working cylinder of the press. A working plunger piston which is slidable in the cylinder is coupled to the lower travelling crosshead of the press frame through spherical jointing to eliminate transverse forces on the piston.
