A method of controlling a brushless motor that includes storing a lookup table of control values, periodically obtaining a speed-adjusted control value, and exciting a phase winding of the motor. The speed-adjusted control value is then used to define the phase and/or length of excitation. Obtaining the speed-adjusted control value includes measuring the speed of the motor, increasing or decreasing a speed-adjust variable in the event that the measured speed is greater or less than a threshold, selecting a control value from the lookup table using the measured speed, and adjusting the selected control value using the speed-adjust variable to obtain the speed-adjusted control value. Additionally, a control system that implements the method, and a motor assembly that incorporates the brushless motor and the control system.

Method of controlling a brushless motor

A controller for a brushless motor that includes a PWM module configured in half-bridge or full-bridge mode. The PWM module outputs control signals for controlling the excitation of a winding of the motor, and one of the duty cycle and the period of the PWM module defines a time at which the winding is commutated.

Controller for a brushless motor

A control system for an electric machine, the control system including a position sensor and a drive controller. The drive controller generates one or more control signals for use in exciting a winding of the electric machine. Control signals for each electrical half-cycle of one mechanical cycle are generated by the drive controller in response to a single edge of a signal output by the position-sensor.

A method of controlling an electrical machine that includes selecting an edge of a rotor-position signal as a reference edge and commutating a phase winding of the electrical machine at times relative to the reference edge. The rotor-position signal has at least four edges per mechanical cycle, each of the edges being associated with a respective zero-crossing in back EMF or minimum in inductance of the phase winding. The angular position of at least one of the edges relative to its respective zero-crossing or minimum is different to that of the other edges. The reference edge is then selected from the edges such that the angular position of the reference edge relative to its respective zero-crossing or minimum is the same with each power on of the electrical machine. Additionally, a controller and control system that implement the method.

Control of an electrical machine

A controller for a brushless motor that includes an input for receiving an analog signal, an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for sampling the analog signal, and a processor. The processor starts the ADC during a first electrical half-cycle and reads the ADC during a second electrical half-cycle of the motor. Additionally, a motor system that includes the controller.

A control system for an electric machine, the control system including a position sensor and a drive controller. The drive controller generates one or more control signals for exciting a winding of the electric machine in response to edges of a signal output by the position sensor. Moreover, the drive controller generates control signals in response to an edge that occurs within a time window. The time window starts at a time when control signals are generated and has a length less than the electrical half-cycle period.

A method of controlling an electrical machine that includes commutating a phase winding of the electrical machine at a time T_COM() after a first edge and at a time T_COM() after a second edge of a rotor-position signal. T_COM() is defined by the equation: T_COM()=T_COM()+T_AVE&#x2212;T_PD, where T_AVE is an average period between edges of the rotor-position signal, and T_PD is the period between the first and second edges. A controller for a brushless motor that includes a processor, a first timer, a second timer, a compare register, a comparator, an input, and one or more outputs. The processor starts the first timer in response to a signal at the input. The first timer then generates an interrupt after a first period. In response to the interrupt, the processor generates a first control signal at the outputs. The processor also loads the compare register and starts the second timer in response to either the input signal or the interrupt. The comparator then generates a second control signal at the outputs when the second timer and the compare register correspond. Additionally, a motor system that includes the controller.

An electrical machine, such as a switched reluctance motor, has a rotor and at least one electrically energizable phase winding. A control map is derived during production that includes a predetermined advance angle profile representing the energization of the phase winding with respect to the angular position of the rotor over a range of rotor speeds. This is stored in memory in a controller together with an angle correction factor to be applied to a predetermined portion of the advance angle profile. The angle correction factor compensates for the difference between a desired input power and the measured input power. The correction factor may be transmitted to the controller by means of radio frequency signals.

Control of electrical machines

An electrical machine, such as a switched reluctance motor, has a rotor and a controller arranged to energize at least one electrically energizable phase winding in dependence on the angular position of the rotor. The controller may employ a control law table derived by applying a predetermined DC link voltage to the windings. Differences between an applied DC link voltage and the predetermined DC link voltage may be compensated by applying a predetermined correction to the angular position of energization of the phase winding in dependence on the value applied DC link voltage. Such a compensation factor may be derived from a relationship held in memory.
