Compositions and methods are provided for producing crystalline forms of organic acids or salts or lactones thereof from an aqueous solution. More specifically, methods are provided for producing a crystalline form of a salt of mevalonic acid (also referred to as X-MVA) from an aqueous solution, comprising subjecting the aqueous solution comprising said X-MVA to a purification step to produce a purified solution and crystallizing said X-MVA from said purified solution by water solvent crystallization. Methods are also provided for producing mevalonolactone from an aqueous solution comprising X-MVA, comprising subjecting the aqueous solution comprising said X-MVA to cation exchange thereby converting said aqueous solution comprising X-MVA to an aqueous solution comprising mevalonolactone (MVL). Methods are also provided for producing mevalonolactone monohydrate crystals.

Methods for recovering organic acids or salts or lactones thereof from aqueous solutions using water solvent crystallization and compositions thereof

Disclosed herein are aqueous compositions comprising fructose and methods of production thereof. A method for producing an aqueous composition comprising fructose can comprise, for example, conducting an enzymatic reaction by contacting water, sucrose, and a glucosyltransferase enzyme that synthesizes poly alpha-1,3-glucan having at least 30% alpha-1,3-linkages. A soluble fraction produced by such a reaction comprises at least about 55% fructose on a dry weight basis, and can be separated from insoluble poly alpha-1,3-glucan product(s), thereby providing an aqueous composition comprising fructose.

Production and composition of fructose syrup

The invention relates to an improved nanofiltration process for separating and recovering components, such as sugars and sugar alcohols from multicomponent mixtures. The process of the invention is characterized by collecting the nanofiltration retentate/permeate in several fractions with different purity, optional recycling of at least one of the collected nanofiltration retentate/permeate fractions to the nanofiltration and recovering the desired component from the nanofiltration permeate/retentate fractions by different methods. In one embodiment of the invention, the process comprises a combination of nanofiltration and chromatography.

The invention relates to an improved nanofiltration process of recovering xylose from a solution of a plant-based biomass hydrolysate. The process of the present invention is based on the regulation of the xylose flux in the nanofiltration process.

The invention relates to removing crystallization inhibitors from a solution comprising one or more reducing sugars by nanofiltration, hydrolysis and/or chromatography. The reducing sugars are typically selected from fructose and xylose.

Crystallization of sugars

The invention relates to a separation process of fractionating a solution comprising betaine and sucrose by subjecting said solution to chromatographic fractionation and nanofiltration and recovering a fraction enriched in betaine and optionally a fraction enriched in sucrose. The solution to be fractionated in accordance with the present invention is typically a sugar beet-derived solution, for instance a molasses solution.

Process for recovering betaine

The invention relates to a process of separating compounds with a small molar mass from compounds having a molar mass less than 1.9 times that of the compounds with a small molar mass using nanofiltration. The compounds with a small molar mass have a typical molar mass less than 250 g/mol. In one embodiment of the invention, pentose sugars are separated from hexose sugars. The invention can be applied to the recovery of xylose from spent liquors and to the recovery of betaine from sugar beet pulp extracts, for example.

The present invention relates to the production of xylitol. In particular, processes utilising L-xylose as an intermediate for xylitol production are described. The present invention also relates to process for the preparation or L-xylose, as an intermediate, by-product or end-product to be used per se.

Process for the production of xylitol

The invention relates to a method of simultaneous purification and separation of pectin and pectic sugars/oligomers from sugar beet pulp using a multi-step process in an aqueous solution. The method comprises hydrolysis of the sugar beet pulp, solids separation from the sugar beet pulp hydrolysate as well as fractionation and desalting of the aqueous solution of the sugar beet pulp hydrolysate thus obtained into a desalted solution enriched in pectin and a desalted solution enriched in pectic sugars/oligomers. The process may also comprise optional further steps, such as clarification, adsorption, concentration and further chromatographic treatment.

Process for the fractionation of sugar beet pulp

The invention relates to chromatographic fractionation of pectin-containing vegetable material, such as sugar beet pulp. In the method of the invention, a pectin-containing hydrolysate is chromatographically separated into a pectin fraction, a salt fraction and a sugar fraction. The method is carried out by using a cation exchange resin, which is preferably in the form of a multivalent metal.

Chromatographic fractionation of vegetable material

The invention relates to the production of mannitol by bioconversion with the aid of immobilized micro-organisms as well as to the use of the mannitol and by-products formed in the conversion process. In said process a solution containing a substrate convertible into mannitol is fed into contact with solid carrier particles containing viable mannitol-forming microorganism cells immobilized in and/or on said particles. The solution is reconditioned between successive conversion steps in order to provide conversion of a major portion of said substrate into mannitol.
