For efficiently handling network traffic via a fixed access, classification of UL data traffic in a communication device may be accomplished in a reflective mode by detecting identifiers of outgoing uplink data packets which are complementary to identifiers of incoming downlink data packets. The downlink data packets are already assigned to the traffic classes. The outgoing uplink data packets carrying the complementary identifier are assigned to the same traffic class as the incoming downlink data packets. For this purpose, the communication device is provided with a traffic classificator. In the reflective mode, the traffic classificator locally generates uplink packet classification rules by monitoring received downlink data packets.

Handling network traffic via a fixed access

To handle network traffic, a Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) node receives, from a Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) network node, packet inspection control data that maps a specific service to an identifier. The DPI node identifies that a data packet pertains to the specific service. The identifying comprises performing DPI on at least a data section of the data packet. The DPI node notifies the PCRF network node that the DPI node received the data packet and that the data packet pertains to the specific service. The DPI node marks the data packet with the identifier in accordance with the packet inspection control data received from the PCRF network node.

Techniques for handling network traffic

A service class for a transmission of data packets between a service entity and a user equipment is selected from a plurality of service classes. A first transmission context is established between a core network node and the user equipment, and is associated with a first set of attributes for defining a first quality of service for the transmission. Furthermore, a second transmission context is established between an access node and the user equipment, and is associated with a second set of attributes for defining a second quality of service for the transmission. The selected service class determines the first set of attributes by a first unique mapping function performed in the core network node and the selected service class determines the second set of attributes by a second unique mapping function performed in the access node.

Method and devices for specifying the quality of service in a transmission of data packets

A user equipment receives incoming data packets from one of a plurality of bearers. The incoming data packets comprise a first identifier indicating a source. The user equipment also detect outgoing data packets which include a second identifier indicating the source of the first identifier as destination of the outgoing data packet. The user equipment routes detected outgoing data packets which include the second identifier to the same bearer from which the incoming data packets having said first identifier are received. The detecting and routing is selectively activated on the basis of a control signal.

In a mobile communication environment, the data traffic is mapped to a number of bearers. In a downlink direction, this is accomplished by filtering data packets on the basis of an identifier which is included into the data packets in response to packet inspection. In the uplink direction, a mirroring function is applied which detects incoming data packets, which are received on one of a plurality of bearers and have a first identifier, and outgoing data packets having a second identifier which is complementary to the first identifier. The outgoing data packets having the complementary second identifier are routed to the same bearer from which the incoming data packets are received.

For efficiently handling network traffic via a fixed access, classification of UL data traffic in a communication device () may be accomplished in a reflective mode by detecting identifiers of outgoing uplink data packets which are complementary to identifiers of incoming downlink data packets. The downlink data packets are already assigned to the traffic classes (). The outgoing uplink data packets carrying the complementary identifier are assigned to the same traffic class () as the incoming downlink data packets. For this purpose, the communication device () is provided with a traffic classificator (). In the reflective mode, the traffic classificator () locally generates uplink packet classification rules () by monitoring received downlink data packets.

In a mobile communication environment, the data traffic is mapped to a number of bearers (). A method for specifying the quality of service in a transmission of data packets between a service entity (AF) and a user equipment over a mobile network is described. The mobile network comprises a core network node (SGSN) and an access node (NB, RNC) which are adapted to control the handling of data packets sent between the service entity (AF) and the user equipment (UE). A plurality of service classes relating to the quality of service are preconfigured and a selected service class is selected from said plurality for the transmission. A first transmission context (PDP) is established between the core network node and the user equipment (UE), said first transmission context being associated with a first set of attributes for defining a first quality of service for the exchange of the data packets with the user equipment in the transmission. Furthermore, a second transmission context (RAB, RB) is established between the access node (NB, RNC) and the user equipment (UE), said second transmission context being associated with a second set of attributes for defining a second quality of service for the exchange of the data packets with the user equipment in the transmission. The selected service class determines the first set of attributes by a first unique mapping function performed in the core network node and the selected service class determines the second set of attributes by a second unique mapping function performed in the access node. A corresponding mobile network, control device and computer program are also described.

The present invention relates to a partitioning entity and a method for partitioning capacity in a communication network to avoid starvation of certain data traffic and to support services with different characteristics. The method of partitioning capacity comprises assigning communication links to a group associated with a time-varying group capacity to form a group of communication links. The group comprises a first sub-group and at least a second sub-group of communication links. Further, the method comprises allocating a non-zero fraction of the time-varying group capacity to the first sub-group of communication links of the group.

Partitioning entity and method for partitioning capacity

A system and method for specifying the quality of service in a transmission of data packets between a service entity and a user equipment is provided. A plurality of service classes relating to the quality of service are preconfigured and a selected service class is selected. A first transmission context, associated with a first set of attributes, is established between a core network node and the user equipment. A second transmission context, associated with a second set of attributes, is established between an access node and the user equipment. The selected service class is specified by a third set of attributes, which is forwarded to the core network node and the access node. The third set of attributes is used to determine the first set of attributes and/or the second set of attributes.

A method for use in a wireless communications system in which there is at least a first mode which controls the traffic to and from user terminals in a cell within the system, so that there is downlink traffic in the system. The first node transmits downlink traffic in radio frames, each of which comprises sub-frames. The first node performs measurements on pre-defined system indicators in at least said first cell, and based on the results of said measurements, the first node is allowed to autonomously decide to vary the number of available down link sub-frames used for down link traffic in said down link radio frames and also to vary the content of the down link sub frames which are used, said decision being valid for a time which is specified by the first node.

Method and a device for power reduction in an LTE system

In a mobile communication network, data traffic of a certain quality of service class is forwarded in accordance with a traffic forwarding policy associated with this quality of service class, e.g. by establishing dedicated bearers (). For implementing energy control, an energy control attribute is assigned to the quality of service class. On the basis of the energy control attribute, a data throughput for forwarding the data traffic is limited to a maximum limit. This may be accomplished by using a throughput limiter () in one or more nodes () participating in the transport of the data traffic.

Energy control in a mobile communication network

A method is described for associating a data packet (DP) with a packet bearer (PB) in a user equipment (UE) of a communication network. The data packet is sent in a data flow from an application function of the user equipment, the packet bearer (PB) is established with the user equipment to transmit the data packet (DP) over the communication network towards a further entity, and the user equipment is adapted to establish different packet bearers. The method comprises the steps of identifying the flow with the data packet in a control entity of the communication network, determining the packet bearer for association with said flow from the different packet bearers in a policy function of the control entity, determining a routing level identification of the further entity, instructing the user equipment to install a packet filter based on the routing level identification, wherein the packet filter associates data packets comprising the routing level identification of the further entity with the determined packet bearer, providing the routing level identification to the application function, including the routing level identification into the data packet, and forwarding the data packet (DP) on the determined packet bearer (PB). A corresponding network, control entity, monitoring entity and computer program are also described.
