A vehicle seat and an airbag system, the seat having a backrest and a squab, extending from the backrest in a longitudinal direction, the backrest extending in height from the squab at a first lower position to a second upper position arranged proximal to shoulders of an occupant in a seated position, the airbag system having an airbag to receive inflating gas from an inflator to inflate the airbag, in which the airbag includes an upper region that extends over a head of the occupant in the seated position and a lower region that extends between a first and second side of the backrest and around a mid-section of the seated occupant, the airbag system having a tether system interconnecting the seat at the second upper position of the backrest and airbag to restrain the lower region of the airbag in the inflated configuration in the longitudinal direction.

Vehicle airbag system

A vehicle seat for supporting an occupant in a sitting position includes a backrest, and an airbag unit. The airbag unit comprises an inflatable airbag provided in an initially rolled and/or folded airbag package, and an inflator actuable to direct inflating gas into the airbag to inflate the airbag into an inflated configuration. The airbag comprises a pair of inflatable chambers which are physically connected to one another via a connecting interface, and are fluidly isolated from one another. The airbag unit is mounted and configured such that, upon actuation of said inflator to inflate the airbag, the inflatable chambers inflate into respective deployed positions in which they: i) extend forwardly from respective opposing and laterally spaced-apart side regions of said backrest; and ii) extend upwardly, and laterally inwardly across an uppermost region of the seat towards said connecting interface, so as to thereby cooperate to define an inflated shroud around at least an uppermost region of the backrest so as to extend over the sitting position and provide lateral protection to a said occupant of the seat in the sitting position.

Vehicle seat

There is proposed a vehicle seat configured to support an occupant () in a sitting position, the seat comprising: a squab (), a backrest (), and an airbag unit. The airbag unit comprises an inflatable bag () and an inflator (). The airbag comprises an inflatable chamber (). The airbag further comprises an inflatable guide (), connected to the inflator and the inflatable chamber. Upon actuation of said inflator, said inflatable guide is at least partially inflated before the inflatable chamber, thereby initially urging the inflatable chamber away from the backrest of the seat. The airbag is configured such that after the inflatable guide is at least partially inflated, the inflatable chamber inflates into a deployed position in which it defines an inflated shroud which extends over said sitting position and provides lateral protection to said occupant of the seat in said sitting position.

Airbag unit for a vehicle seat

An airbag device for a motor vehicle, the airbag device can be provided on and secured to a seat frame and is designed to protect the head and rib cage of an occupant in the event of side impact or vehicle rollover. The airbag device has a gas generator, an airbag cushion and a first securing system, the first securing system, the gas generator and the airbag cushion being connected to one another to secure the airbag device to the seat frame. A second securing system is provided in the side region of the airbag cushion above the connecting region with the first securing system The second securing system is designed to secure the airbag cushion, with an additional securing point in the side region, to the seat frame above the first securing system.
