The media player employs an operating system that supports a virtual machine into which auto-run playback programs may be loaded and run. The auto run playback program is stored on the media containing the program content, such as on an optical disc medium. When the medium is inserted in the player, the auto run playback program automatically launches and is thereafter used to access playback the media content. Support for legacy media is provided to allow the player to playback compact discs and DVD discs that were manufactured without the auto run playback program.

A copy-resistant read-only digital optical disc having encrypted digital data. The copy-resistant read-only digital optical disc includes a digital work, a variable user data format encoding said digital work after encryption with a variable software algorithm, an implementation of said variable software algorithm, and an implementation of said variable user data format encoded in a default format. The encrypted digital data is read on an adaptable digital optical disc player, which is adaptable to a user data format described on said copy-resistant read-only digital optical disc made in accordance with this invention. A copy-resistant read-only digital optical disc made in accordance with this invention will provide necessary user data format information on the disc in a default format, which is always accessible by an adaptable player.

A hitless wavelength selective optical device includes a first thermo-optic switch (TOS), a second TOS, a first waveguide, a second waveguide, a third waveguide, a heating element and a control unit. The first TOS includes receives a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signal at a first port of the first TOS. The second TOS provides at least one channel of the WDM signal at a first port of the second TOS. The first waveguide is coupled between second ports of the first and second TOS. The second waveguide includes a tunable filter that reflects a selected channel from the received WDM signal and coupled between the third ports of the first and second TOS.

Improved linear illumination sources are disclosed which utilize external, highly reflective enclosures containing one or more linear openings and thereby achieve improved source efficiency, output irradiance and/or output radiance. Such improved illumination sources may be combined with additional optical elements to produce more complex illumination systems.

Linear illumination sources and systems

An illumination system provides a light output distribution that is ideally suited for home and office applications. The illumination system generally comprises a solid waveguide and a light directing structure located on a side opposite of the waveguide's light output side for controlling the light output distribution from the illumination system. The light directing structure may be unitarily formed with the waveguide or it may be secured thereto by an interface which provides approximately 100% contact between the waveguide and light directing structure. The light directing structure includes an array of light directing features configured as generally lenticular prisms that extend in a direction substantially perpendicular (i.e., not parallel) to the average direction at which light rays enter and propagate through the waveguide. Each light directing feature defines an included angle that controls the distribution of light output from the illumination system in a first direction. The interface, when provided, controls the distribution of light output from the illumination system in a second direction that is generally orthogonal with respect to the first direction.

Illumination system having an array of linear prisms

An illumination system having a hollow waveguide including first and second light directing arrays (LDA), each having a plurality of generally lenticular prisms defined thereon and arranged generally orthogonally with respect to each other. Light rays from a light source enter the waveguide through a light input side and emerge from the waveguide through a light output side at a predetermined flux and angular distribution. The light output flux and angular distribution can each be independently controlled in accordance with the present invention by the LDAs to provide an illumination system that can be configured for various light output distribution and intensity requirements.

Illumination system using edge-illuminated hollow waveguide and lenticular optical structures

An optical illumination system is comprised of: (a) a light source means having a reflective emitting surface and an intrinsic luminance (brightness), (b) a light transmitting means; (c) a light reflecting means to reflect and recycle a portion of the light emitted by the light source means back to the light source means; and (d) a light extracting means to extract a portion of the light from the light transmitting means and direct the light to the output of the illumination system. The resulting illumination system achieves an enhanced output luminance. Under certain conditions, it is possible to achieve an output luminance that is greater than the intrinsic luminance of the bare light source.

Illumination system with light recycling to enhance brightness

An illumination system has separate components for extracting and directing light from a waveguide. The system eliminates the need to provide a light directing array (LDA) that is optically and physically coupled to the waveguide. It is more reliable and robust than previous illumination systems and virtually eliminates the failures associated illumination systems having laminated LDAs. Manufacturing costs are reduced and system performance and reliability are improved. The illumination system is inexpensive to construct, and operates in an efficient, reliable manner, affording extended service at low cost.
