A reflection type projector in which the brightness of light projected onto a screen increases by simultaneously overlapping three colors used for representation of a color image. The reflection type projector includes a light source, first and second dichromatic mirrors arranged on an optical path for transmitting and reflecting input light according to the wavelength thereof, first, second and third image forming devices for generating an image corresponding to each color from input light, a first prism arranged on an optical path between the first dichromatic mirror and the first image forming device, a second prism arranged on an optical path between the second dichromatic mirror and the second image forming device, and a third prism arranged on an optical path between the second dichromatic mirror and the third image forming device. A dichromatic beam splitter is provided having first and second mirror surfaces for selectively transmitting or reflecting light according to the wavelength thereof so that the light input passing the first, second and third prisms is output in one direction. A correction prism is installed on an exit surface of the dichromatic beam splitter for allowing an optical axis of the light input to the dichromatic beam splitter passing each of the first, second and third prisms to be input approximately perpendicular to each of three incident surfaces of the dichromatic beam splitter. A projection lens unit is provided for magnifying and projecting light input from the dichromatic beam splitter toward a screen.

Reflection type projector

A video signal processing apparatus for use in a two-panel liquid crystal projector includes a preprocessor for receiving primary color video signals and for generating a first luminance signal having only a high frequency component and a first plurality of color signals in which the high frequency component is removed, and a matrix circuit for receiving the first luminance signal and the first plurality of color signals, and for generating a second luminance signal and a second plurality of color signals using a minimum one of the first plurality of color signals as a reference signal, wherein each of the second plurality of color signals is generated by subtracting the reference signal from a respective first color signal. The second luminance signal and the second plurality of color signals generated by the matrix circuit are used for light modulation by a luminance signal liquid crystal panel and a color signal liquid crystal panel, respectively. Thus, an unnatural image phenomenon in an image displayed with regard to the primary color video signals is removed, and resolution and brightness can be improved. Further, disharmonization between the luminance signal component and the color signal component can be prevented in view of the optical and signal processing conditions.

Video processor for two-panel liquid crystal projector

A rear projector employing an image display uses a polymer dispersion liquid crystal (PDLC) panel which suppresses a turbulent reflection due to a high light refractive index. Accordingly, a slim appearance is attained since a light separating/synthesizing system is eliminated, and the resolution and brightness of the image is improved by precisely and easily controlling the change of the light pathway.

A video signal processing apparatus for use in a two-panel liquid crystal projector includes a matrix circuit which receives a luminance signal and color signals and generates a new luminance signal by adding the minimum value of the color difference signals to the luminance signal. The minimum value is subtracted from the respective color difference signals to generate new color signals. Another matrix circuit generates color signals and a luminance signal which are applied to a liquid crystal panel based on the minimum value of the color signals which are obtained by the existing matrix circuit instead of using the color difference signals. The color signals and luminance signal which are obtained by the respective matrix circuits are used for light modulation for a color liquid crystal panel and a white/black liquid crystal panel. The amplitude of the newly obtained luminance signal is amplified based on the difference between light utilization efficiencies of the luminance signal and the color signals which are displayed on a screen. Thus, an unnatural image phenomenon is removed and resolution and brightness can be improved. Further, dis-harmonization between the luminance signal component and the color signal component can be prevented in view of the optical and signal processing conditions.

Video signal processor for two-panel liquid crystal projector

A liquid crystal projector has a video monitor for displaying the same image as that displayed on a screen. The video monitor uses an amount of the light which is not displayed on the front screen according to the light transmission characteristic of a dichroic mirror, to thereby enable a user to view the same image as that displayed on the front screen through a projection lens.

A picture projecting apparatus for a projection display system and the method thereof are disclosed. The apparatus converts color video signals which are red, green and blue colors arranged in series, to light signals which have the wavelengths of the light corresponding to the respective red, green and blue colors for a vertical scanning line, separates the red, green and blue monochromatic component lights from the converted light signals, and focuses the separated red, green and blue component lights. Accordingly, the red, green and blue color video signals converted to have a triple speed is scanned to a monochrome picture tube, to separate and reflect the light signal generated from the monochrome picture tube into red, green and blue component signals through dichroic mirrors and mirrors. At this time, according to input synchronizing signals of the red, green and blue video signals, electronic liquid crystal shutters, respectively composed of a single pixel, are driven to select separated red, green and blue component signals and focus through a lens thereby being projected on a large color screen of high resolution.
