An apparatus for detecting an open neutral condition in a split phase power system is described. The apparatus includes two powered lines providing output electricity to an electrical distribution system and a shared neutral line providing a grounded neutral to the first and second powered lines. The apparatus is configured for detecting when an open neutral condition is present in the split phase power system by determining when a power current is present on one or both of the first and second powered lines while a return current is not present on the neutral line; and in response to detecting that the open neutral condition is present, causing an interrupter to interrupt the power supplied by the first and second powered lines or to generate a signal indicating an open condition.

A circuit is disclosed for disconnecting electrical power upon the detection of an elevated temperature comprising an electrical plug and an electrical receptacle interconnected by a power cable. An interruption circuit having a disconnect switch is interposed in the power cable. A plug heat sensitive device and a receptacle heat sensitive device monitor the temperature of the electrical plug and the electrical receptacle. An elevated temperature detection circuit opens the disconnect switch upon the detection of an elevated temperature in one of the electrical plug and the electrical receptacle to prevent an overheated condition.

An improved electrical connector is disclosed for facilitating disconnection an electrical plug. A handle is pivotably mounted to the electrical plug. A distal end of the plug handle extends transversely and outwardly defining opposed arcuate finger receiving regions for accommodating adjacent fingers of the operator for enabling the operator grasp the plug handle to facilitating disconnection an electrical plug. The present invention is equally suitable for use with an electrical receptacle.
