A system and method of calibrating optical measuring equipment includes optically measuring discrete objects of a first known predictable pattern from a calibration apparatus, wherein the first known predictable pattern is a bit pattern. A recording surface optical reader is calibrated based on the optically measuring. Using the first known predictable pattern, contamination is filtered from the results of the optically measuring.

Method and system for optical calibration

A skewed burnishing head arrangement is provided for burnishing the surface of a disc. The skewing of the burnishing head relative to the diameter perpendicular to a sweeping direction provides improved wiping action that catches loose particles and surface contamination, as well as performing aggressive asperity cutting and surface conditioning, while preventing particles from being embedded into a disc surface.

Sweeper burnish head

A disc burnishing head includes an array of burnishing pads and a first and second side rail projecting from a bottom surface of a slider body. The side rails each have an inside surface facing the burnishing pads and an outside surface facing outward. The outside surface of at least the first side rail is serrated. The serrations define a plurality of teeth and notches on the outside surface of the first side rail for cutting, cleaning, and conditioning defects from the surface of a disc.

A hybrid burnishing head for processing of surfaces of hard disk media comprises a solid body including a first major surface and a second, opposed major surface comprising a burnishing surface including first and second surface portions, wherein the first surface portion is configured for providing air bearing stability and flyability of the head over the media surface, the second surface portion is configured for providing burnishing of a media surface, and the first and second surface portions are operatively decoupled for simultaneously providing optimized air bearing stability/flyability and burnishing aggressiveness for a particular application.
