A heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) write head contains a main pole, a waveguide, and a near-field transducer containing an antenna disposed between the waveguide and the main pole. A first portion of the antenna includes a layer stack of three or more gold-based component layers that contain a waveguide-side outermost gold-based component layer, a pole-side outermost gold-based component layer, and one or more intermediate gold-based component layers. An intermediate gold-based component layer of the one or more intermediate gold-based component layers includes at least one platinum group metal (PGM) at a maximum total atomic percentage that is greater than a total atomic percentage of the at least one PGM in the waveguide-side outermost gold-based component layer and is greater than a total atomic percentage of the at least one PGM in the pole-side outermost gold-based component layer.

Heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) write head with enhanced stability and methods for making the same

The present disclosure generally relates to a magnetic recording head for a magnetic media drive. The magnetic recording head comprises a main pole, a waveguide disposed adjacent to the main pole, a near field transducer (NFT) coupled between the main pole and the waveguide at a media facing surface (MFS), a thermal shunt disposed on the NFT, the thermal shunt being recessed from the MFS, and a stable material disposed on the NFT at the MFS. In some embodiments, the stable material is wedge-shaped or triangular-shaped. In another embodiment, the stable material comprises a first portion and a second portion, where the first and second portions may each by linear, or where the first portion is triangular-shaped and the second portion is square-shaped. The stable material may be in contact with the thermal shunt, or spaced from the thermal shunt.

A heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) head for recording data in data tracks of a HAMR disk has a gas-bearing slider that supports a near-field transducer (NFT) and a main magnetic pole formed of two layers. The first main pole layer has a cross-track width at the slider's gas-bearing surface (GBS) that tapers down in the direction towards the NFT where the optical spot is formed. The second main pole layer is located away from the NFT and has a substantially wider cross-track width than the first main pole layer so as to provide sufficient magnetic field for writing. Layers of heat sink material are located on the sloped cross-track sides of the tapered first main pole layer to reduce the temperature and thus the likelihood of oxidation of the main pole layers.

The embodiments of the present invention generally relate to a magnetic head having a magnetic lip. The vertical sides and the bottom of the magnetic lip are covered by one or more conductive layers. In one embodiment, the bottom of the magnetic lip is covered by a first conductive layer and the vertical sides of the magnetic lip are covered by a second conductive layer. The conductive layers are made of a material that would not react with oxygen, thus no oxide films are formed on the vertical sides and the bottom of the magnetic lip during the manufacturing of the magnetic head.

A system, according to one embodiment, includes a near field transducer having a conductive metal film and an aperture, and a magnetic lip adjacent the aperture. System and method for integration of magnetic lip and near field transducer in heat assisted magnetic recording write heads

The present invention generally relates to a HAMR head. An insulating layer isolates the NFT from the magnetic lip of the magnetic pole. A noble metal alloy diffusion barrier layer is present between the insulating layer and the magnetic lip to prevent diffusion from the insulating layer into the magnetic lip. The noble metal alloy has a melting point of greater than about 1065 degrees Celsius, and the noble metals may be selected from Au, Pt, Ir, Re and Ru. The alloying elements comprise less than 10 percent of the alloy. The alloying elements can include Rh, W, Mo, Ni, Pt, Co, B, Ru and combinations thereof. The diffusion barrier layer may surround the magnetic lip, may surround the insulating layer, or may simply be at the interface of the insulating layer and the magnetic lip.

An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a near field transducer comprising a conductive metal film having a main body, a notch extending from the main body, and a notch diffusion barrier layer interposed between the notch and the main body. An apparatus according to another embodiment includes a write pole, and a near field transducer adjacent the write pole. The near field transducer includes a conductive metal film having a main body, a notch extending from the main body, and a notch diffusion barrier layer interposed between the notch and the main body. The notch diffusion barrier layer includes a metal selected from a group consisting of Rh, W, Mo, Ru, Ir, Co, Ni, Pt, B, and alloys thereof. Additional systems and methods are also presented.

Embodiments of the present invention generally relate to a HAMR head including a near field transducer having an antenna, a surface diffusion inhibitor layer disposed on a portion of the antenna and an aperture disposed over the surface diffusion inhibitor layer. In a heat-assisted magnetic recording head for use in a hard disk drive, a thermal shunt is positioned between an E-antenna near field transducer (NFT) and a return pole, to draw excess heat away from the NFT region. The thermal shunt comprises two portions separated by a gap that has a trapezoidal cross-section, where the NFT-side of the gap is wider than the return pole-side of the gap.

A method for manufacturing a magnetic read sensor at very narrow track widths. The method uses an amorphous carbon mask layer to pattern the sensor by ion milling, rather than a mask constructed of a material such as photoresist or DURIMIDE&#xae; which can bend over during ion milling at very narrow track widths. By using the amorphous carbon layer as the masking layer, the trackwidth can be very small, while avoiding this bending over of the mask that has been experienced with prior art methods. In addition, the track-width can be further reduced by using a reactive ion etching to further reduce the width of the amorphous carbon mask prior to patterning the sensor. The method also allows extraneous portions of the side insulation layer and hard bias layer to be removed above the sensor by a light CMP process.
