An electric machine includes a stator having a plurality of stator teeth. Each stator tooth of the plurality of stator teeth includes a winding disposed there around. Each stator tooth of the plurality of stator teeth is shaped to receive a plurality of microchannels. The microchannels contain a circulating heat-transfer fluid; Each stator tooth of the plurality of stator teeth is thermally exposed to the heat-transfer fluid via the plurality of microchannels so as to effectuate heat removal from each stator tooth of the plurality of stator teeth.

High torque density electric machine with directly cooled end windings

An electric machine includes a stator having a stator winding disposed thereon. A rotor is electromagnetically exposed to the stator. A field winding and an induction winding are disposed on the rotor. A rectifier is electrically coupled to the induction winding and the field winding. Upon application of a voltage to the stator winding, the stator winding produces a first rotating magnetic field and a second rotating magnetic field that has a different spatial frequency than the first rotating magnetic field. The first rotating magnetic field interacts asynchronously with the induction winding to produce an alternating current in the induction winding. The rectifier changes the alternating current to a direct current that is supplied to the field winding. The field winding interacts synchronously with the second rotating magnetic field.

Method and system for brushless wound field synchronous machines

A power converter includes a multiple-winding transformer. The multiple-winding transformer provides an electromagnetic link between an input side and an output side of the power converter. An inductor is arranged on at least one of the input side and the output side of the power converter in parallel with the multiple-winding transformer. At least one first capacitor is arranged on the input side of the power converter in parallel with the multiple-winding transformer and the inductor. At least one second capacitor is arranged on the output side of the power converter in parallel with the multiple-winding transformer. The inductor, the at least one first capacitor, and the at least one second capacitor define a parallel resonance tank. A first plurality of switching devices is arranged on the input side. A second plurality of switching devices is arranged on the output side.

Method and apparatus for medium-voltage electronic power conversion

An axial flux magnetic geared machine includes a high speed magnetic rotor and a low speed magnetic rotor maintained in a spaced relationship from the high speed magnetic rotor. A modulating structure is disposed between the high speed magnetic rotor and the low speed magnetic rotor. A stator is disposed in a radially central bore of one or more of the high speed magnetic rotor, the low speed magnetic rotor, and the modulating structure.

Method and apparatus for compact axial flux magnetically geared machines

Controlling a multiphase electric motor by controlling the transmission of power to a first set of phases of a multiphase electric motor in accordance with a first operating configuration; detecting the presence of a shorted phase in the first set of phases while the first set of phases are being operated in accordance with the first operating configuration; and, responsive to detection of the shorted phase, adjusting control of the transmission of power to the multiphase electric motor such that power is transmitted to a second set of phases in accordance with a second operating configuration.

System and method for controlling muliphase electric motors

Three resonance-based universal power converter topologies are disclosed. One includes a partially resonant parallel L-C link and incorporates intermediate cross-over switching circuits between the link stage and each of the input and output stages (which are constructed using unidirectional switches), thereby permitting the partially resonant circuit to be operated bi-directionally. A second includes a partially resonant series LC link in parallel with the input and output networks. A third includes a partially resonant series LC link in series between the input and output networks. The input and output networks can be formed from either bidirectional switches or a combination of unidirectional switches and intermediate cross-over switching circuits, permitting the partially resonant circuit to be operated bi-directionally. All embodiments permit the use of smaller reactive components in the link stage and the use of AC rather than DC capacitors, which reduces size and costs of the device while increasing the reliability.

DC capacitor-less power converters

A unipolar drive includes a booster, an energy storage module, and a unipolar inverter. The booster increase a voltage received from a power supply to produce an energy output. The energy storage module store at least some of the energy output by the booster. The unipolar inverter energizes windings of a motor using energy from the booster and returns energy from the windings to the booster when the windings are not being energized.

Unipolar drive topology for permanent magnet brushless DC motors and switched reluctance motors

A multiphase induction motor system is disclosed. The system comprises a motor having at least five phases and comprising a stator and a rotor. For each phase, the motor receives a command current to power the motor, where the command current has a fundamental frequency. A processor determines, for each phase, at least one harmonic component of a signal indicative of the fundamental frequency, generates a command current from the harmonic component and the fundamental frequency, and supplies the command current to the stator. A method for operating a multiphase induction motor system is disclosed. A first command current is supplied to a motor having at least five phases, where the first command current powers the motor. The first command current has a fundamental frequency, and the motor comprises a stator and a rotor. For each phase, at least one harmonic component of a signal indicative of the fundamental frequency is determined. A second command current is generated from the harmonic component and the fundamental frequency. The second command current is supplied to the stator.
