A fracture sensing system and method is disclosed herein. The method may include positioning a transmitter and a receiver in a borehole and magnetizing a casing disposed within the borehole to magnetically saturate the casing. The transmitter and receiver may be located inside or outside of the casing. The method may also include inducing with the transmitter an electromagnetic field in a formation surrounding the borehole. The method may also comprise receiving the induced electromagnetic field at the receiver. The induced electromagnetic field may identify a fracture within the formation based, at least in part, on a contrast agent within the fracture.

Fracture sensing system and method

The methods described are for determining distribution, orientation and dimensions of networks of hydraulically-induced fractures within a subterranean formation containing fluids. Detectable signals are generated by particles introduced into the fractures. In an exemplary method proppant-like particles are positioned in the formation during fracturing and allowed to generate a signal during or after fracturing activity. The detectable signals generated by the proppant-like particles are used to map fracture space.

Generating seismic pulses by compressive force to map fractures

Methods for determining distribution, orientation and dimensions of networks of hydraulically-induced fractures within a subterranean formation containing fluids. Micro-seismic events are generated by particles introduced into the fractures which are capable of explosive or chemical reaction. In one method, treated proppant having a reactive coating is positioned in the formation during fracturing and reactive particles are introduced. In another method, reactive particles having a reactive core and a non-reactive coating are positioned in the fractures and react upon removal of the non-reactive coating, such as by dissolving, and reaction with a reactive particle. The waves generated by the micro-seismic events are used to map fracture space.

Method and apparatus for generating seismic pulses to map subterranean fractures

The methods described are for determining distribution, orientation and dimensions of networks of hydraulically-induced fractures within a subterranean formation containing fluids. Micro-seismic events are generated, after cessation of fracturing and establishment of fracture networks, by particles introduced into the fractures which are capable of explosive or chemical reaction. In one method, attachment site particles are positioned within the formation during fracturing and additional reactive particles are later introduced. The reactive particles attach to the attachment sites and, upon a triggering event, react to produce micro-seismic events. The waves generated by the micro-seismic events are used to provide mapping of the effective fracture space. Additionally, time-lapse mapping is provided with use of 'species' of attachment sites and reactive particles.
