A dielectrically loaded printed antenna element is described. The antenna element includes at least one conductive arm supported on a substrate. The conductive arm is dielectrically loaded with at least one high dielectric material that is configured to provide spatial coverage of the conductive arm. An antenna array structure is also described that includes at least a first dielectrically loaded antenna element for transmitting and a second dielectrically loaded antenna element for receiving. The transmitting antenna element is aligned orthogonal to the receiving antenna element to further reduce interference.

Dielectrically loaded printed dipole antenna

The disclosed structures and methods are directed to antenna systems configured to transmit and receive a wireless signal in and from different directions. A switchable lens antenna has excitation ports radiating radio-frequency (RF) wave into a parallel-plate waveguide structure, and a frequency selective structure (FSS). The antenna presented herein is configured to operate in two modes depending on an initial steering angle of the RF wave propagating in the parallel-plate waveguide structure. When the initial steering angle is about or less than a threshold steering angle, FSS is OFF due to its stubs being electrically disconnected from the parallel-plate waveguide structure. When the initial steering angle is higher than the threshold, FSS is ON with stubs being electrically connected to the parallel-plate waveguide structure. When ON, FSS provides phase variance to the RF wave propagating in the parallel-plate waveguide structure and increases steering angle of the RF wave.

Switchable lens antenna with integrated frequency selective structure

The disclosed structures and methods are directed to transmission and reception of a radio-frequency (RF) wave. An antenna comprises a stack-up structure having a first control layer, a second control layer, a first and a second parallel-plate waveguides, and a plurality of through vias. The antenna further comprises a first central port and a second central port being configured to radiate RF wave into the two parallel-plate waveguides independently; vertical-polarization peripheral radiating elements integrated with the first control layer and configured to radiate RF wave in vertical polarization; and horizontal-polarization peripheral radiating elements integrated with the second control layer and configured to radiate RF wave in horizontal polarization. A central port for transmission of RF wave into the stack-up structure of the antenna is also provided. Each vertical-polarization peripheral radiating element is collocated with one of the horizontal-polarization peripheral radiating element such that they cross each other, and that a RF wave radiation beam may be steered at an angle of 0 to 360 degrees in the plane of the stack-up structure, around the central port.

Dual-polarized substrate-integrated 360&#xb0; beam steering antenna

A radio frequency (RF) antenna unit that includes a first antenna and a second antenna. The first antenna is positioned on a reflector element, and includes at least three inverted-F antenna (IFAs) elements that are electrically connected to a first RF signal port and that each have an associated tunable element that controls excitation of the IFA element, the tunable elements being operative to control a polarization direction of the first antenna. The second antenna is co-located on the reflector element with the first antenna, and includes a plurality of antenna elements.

Configurable antenna array with diverse polarizations

The disclosed structures and methods are directed to antenna systems configured to transmit and receive a wireless signal in and from different directions. A switchable artificial magnetic conductor (S-AMC) element that includes a conductive layer, a conductive patch located on one side of the conductive layer and electrically isolated from the conductive layer, and an open stub located on an opposite side of the conductive layer and electrically isolated from the conductive layer. A switch element is configured to selectively open and close an electrical connection between the conductive patch and the open stub in response to a control signal. When the electrical connection is closed the conductive patch presents a high impedance, magnetically conductive surface for radio frequency (RF) signals within a defined frequency band, and when the electrical connection is open the conductive patch presents an electrically conductive surface for RF signals within the defined frequency band.

Reconfigurable radial waveguides with switchable artificial magnetic conductors

The disclosed structures and methods are directed to transmission and reception of a radio-frequency (RF) wave. An antenna comprises a stack-up structure having a first control layer, a second control layer, a first and a second parallel-plate waveguides, and a plurality of through vias. The antenna further comprises a first central port and a second central port being configured to radiate RF wave into the two parallel-plate waveguides independently; vertical-polarization peripheral radiating elements integrated with the first control layer and configured to radiate RF wave in vertical polarization; and horizontal-polarization peripheral radiating elements integrated with the second control layer and configured to radiate RF wave in horizontal polarization. Each vertical-polarization peripheral radiating element is collocated with one of the horizontal-polarization peripheral radiating element such that they cross each other. A central port for transmission of RF wave into the stack-up structure of the antenna is also provided.

Dual-polarized substrate-integrated beam steering antenna

The disclosed structures and methods are directed to antenna systems configured to transmit and receive a wireless signal in and from different directions. An antenna structure comprises a pair of horizontal-polarization (HP) antenna units forming a first parallel-plate waveguide. One of the HP antenna units and a base unit form a second parallel-plate waveguide. The antenna further comprises a pair of vertical-polarization (VP) antenna units each located in one of the first and second parallel-plate waveguides. Each HP antenna unit comprises inverted F antennas (IFAs) configured to radiate a radio-frequency (RF) waves that are horizontally polarized. Each VP antenna unit comprises VP excitation elements configured to radiate the RF waves that are vertically polarized. A method for manufacturing of the antenna structure is also disclosed.

Antenna structure and method for manufacturing the same

An electronically steerable antenna with dual polarization is provided, as well as a method for steering such an antenna. An example antenna may include a driven patch element having dual polarity for radiating or receiving a first beam with a first polarization and radiating or receiving a second beam with a second polarization. The antenna includes a parasitic patch element separated from the driven patch element and in a parasitic coupling arrangement to the driven patch element, as well as first and second tuning elements linked to the parasitic patch element to control first and second terminating impedances of the parasitic patch element, respectively. The first terminating impedance at least partly determines a direction of the first beam, and the second terminating impedance at least partly determines a direction of the second beam.

Dual polarized electronically steerable parasitic antenna radiator (ESPAR)

An antenna that includes a radial waveguide defining a waveguide region between opposed first and second surfaces. A radio frequency (RF) probe is disposed in the waveguide region for generating RF signals, and a plurality of radiating slot antenna elements are disposed on the first surface for emitting the RF signals from the waveguide region. A plurality of spaced apart conductive elements are disposed within the waveguide region. The antenna includes tunable elements that each include a quarter wavelength RF choke coupled through a variable capacitance and an inductive line to a respective one of the conductive elements. A plurality of DC control lines are provided, with each DC control line being connected to at least one of the tunable elements to adjust the variable capacitance thereof. A control circuit is coupled to the DC control lines and configured to selectively apply DC current values to adjust the variable capacitances of the tunable elements to control a propagation direction of the RF signals from the RF probe.

Reconfigurable radial-line slot antenna array

A multi-band single feed dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) and DRA array are provided. The DRA is made of a dielectric material having a first and second antenna regions wherein the second antenna region has a different dielectric constant than the first antenna region. The dielectric material is supported by a feeding substrate. The feeding substrate has a top surface ground plane having a slot positioned below the first antenna region of the dielectric material and a microstrip feeding line on the bottom surface in alignment with the slot on the top surface ground plane.

Multi-band single feed dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) array

A combination antenna element is provided. A first antenna element, for example a waveguide antenna, may be coupled to a waveguide feed such as a Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW). The waveguide antenna may be formed as an aperture at a terminus of the SIW and disposed within a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) internal layer. A second antenna element, for example a microstrip patch antenna (MPA), may be provided on an outer PCB layer, the MPA defining an interior region, the interior region being positioned in line with the first antenna element. Also in some embodiments, the second antenna element is coupled to another antenna feed such as a transmission line feed which propagates signals in a different electromagnetic propagation mode than the waveguide. The transmission line feed may be a stripline located within the waveguide. An antenna array incorporating the combination antenna element is also provided.

Combination antenna element and antenna array

A radio frequency (RF) antenna array that includes a first antenna unit that operates at a first frequency band and includes three antenna elements that are collocated on a reflector element, each of the three antenna elements having a different polarization direction than the other two antenna elements of the first antenna unit. A first switch is associated with the first antenna unit and a first conductive line for selectively connecting each one of the antenna elements of the first antenna unit to the first conductive line. A second antenna unit that operates at a second frequency band also includes three antenna elements that are collocated on the reflector element, each of the three antenna elements having a different polarization direction than the other two antenna elements of the second antenna unit. A second switch is associated with the second antenna unit and a second conductive line for selectively connecting each one of the antenna elements of the second antenna unit to the second conductive line.

Switchable dual band antenna array with three orthogonal polarizations

A substrate integrated waveguide switch and a method of operating the substrate integrated waveguide switch are disclosed. In an embodiment a system includes a dielectric substrate and a switch supported by the dielectric substrate, the switch comprising at least one first transmission path, at least one first switching element in each of the at least one first transmission path, a second transmission path, and at least one second switching element in the second transmission path.

Substrate integrated waveguide switch

A low complexity/cost beamsteering antenna includes a central line feed affixed to a radial waveguide structure, radiating elements positioned along the circumference of the radial waveguide structure, and a plurality of active elements interspersed along the surface of the radial waveguide structure between the central line feed and the radiating elements. The active elements may comprise PIN diodes or microelectromechanical system (MEMS) components, and may be selectively activated/deactivated by DC switches in order to direct the propagation of an RF signal over the radial waveguide structure in a manner similar to a power divider. As a result, the RF signal may be funneled to selected radiating elements, thereby effectively directionally aiming the main lobe of the emitted radiation pattern to beamsteer the wireless transmission.
