The invention is directed to apparatus, systems and methods enabling a service provider to establish an optical demarcation point located at or within equipment controlled at least in part by a customer's domain such that the service provider's domain is able to directly control access of an optical signal to their domain, while simultaneously offering one or more of equipment redundancy for the remote optical demarcation control equipment located at the service provider's edge node, equipment redundancy for transceiver equipment providing hot-standby optical signal origination, or hot-standby facility redundancy where one end of said facility redundancy is located at said service provider's edge node.

Remote optical demarcation point protection

The invention is directed to systems and methods for re-arranging optical spectrum utilization so that unallocated portions of the spectrum may be made contiguous. Rearrangement of optical spectrum is accomplished by moving a channel from its initial spectral location to a targeted spectral location by reserving additional spectrum for that channel that at least includes the targeted spectral location, shifting the channel to the targeted location and then collapsing the reserved spectrum around the targeted location to cover the minimal required spectrum for the channel allocation of the channel. In some cases, a secondary channel can be used as an alternate source to carry user traffic while the first channel is shifted to the targeted location.

Optical spectrum recovery

The invention is directed to apparatus, systems and methods enabling a service provider to establish an optical demarcation point located at or within equipment controlled at least in part by a customer's domain such that the service provider's domain is able to directly control access of an optical signal to their domain based upon at least one optical signal characteristic and at least one of mapping and multiplexing properties pertaining to one or more information flows within said optical signal.

Remote optical demarcation point

An optical add/drop multiplexing unit () includes a demultiplexer () which optically isolates component signals of an optical input signal from an optical input terminal (). A plurality of switching units () can optically couple either of two outputs to either of two inputs. One input of each switching unit receives a respective component signal from the demultiplexer, and the other is coupled to a respective protection input terminal () of the multiplexing unit. One of the output terminals of each switching unit is coupled to a respective protection output terminal (), and the other is coupled to a respective input of a multiplexer (). The multiplexer has an output coupled to an optical output terminal () of the multiplexing unit, and optically combines the signals at its inputs into an optical signal for its output. The multiplexing unit is operable to cause one of the component signals from the input signal to be routed to the further terminal, or to cause a component signal present at the further terminal to be included in the optical signal at the optical output terminal.
