Disclosed is a patient monitoring and drug delivery system and associated methods for use during diagnostic, surgical or other medical procedures. The functionality of the invention enables many time consuming and laborious activities to be minimized or moved to a part in the procedure where time is not as critical. The invention is capable of increasing practice efficiency in patient care facilities through system architecture and design into two separate units. A patient unit receives input signals from patient monitoring connections and outputs the signals to a procedure unit. The procedure unit is operational during the medical procedure and controls the delivery of drugs to the patient.

Patient monitoring and drug delivery system and method of use

A medical effector system comprised of a bedside unit and a procedure unit. The bedside unit contains a series of connection points for receiving inputs from a series of patient monitors. The procedure unit contains a patient monitoring and medical effector program, and a drug delivery pump or magnetic flux generator capable of delivering therapeutic energy to a patient. The medical effector system contains the capability to issue and receive a request from a non-sedated patient, issue and receive a request from a sedated patient and then to calculate a time difference. The medical effector program operates the pump or magnetic flux generator based upon at least some of the patient outputs and program inputs including a calculated time difference. A removable umbilical cable connects the two units and allows the output of the patient monitors as well as other information to travel between the two units.

Medical effector system

Disclosed is an interface between a drug delivery cassette and a medical effector system. The cassette may be mounted to the medical effector system in such a way that a fluid tube located on the cassette is positioned adjacent to a pump located on the medical effector system. The medical effector system may purge the fluid line of air by activating the pump and forcing fluid through the fluid line until a sensor positioned to monitor the fluid line indicates that fluid and not air is present in the tube. To prevent air purging of the fluid tube when connected to the patient, the medical effector system prohibits air purging unless the drug delivery end portion of the fluid tube is in a designated storage site located on the cassette. This is accomplished with a position sensor at the storage site that monitors the position of the fluid tube.

Drug delivery cassette and a medical effector system

An air-bubble-monitoring medication assembly includes a drug infusion subassembly having a tube for administering therein a liquid to a patient, a bubble-size determinator which is positioned to sense an air bubble entrained in the liquid in the tube and which determines the volume of the air bubble, and an analyzer. The analyzer logs the time the detector senses an air bubble and the volume of the air bubble, calculates a running sum of a total air volume of all air bubbles sensed over a time interval, compares the running sum with a preselected limit, and generates an output when the running sum exceeds the preselected limit. The medical system additionally includes a controller assembly which determines a delivery schedule for administering the liquid and which controls the drug infusion subassembly to administer the liquid in accordance with the determined delivery schedule. The method performs the analyzer functions.

Air-bubble-monitoring medication assembly, medical system and method

A ring applicator for applying elastic rings to anatomical tissue during surgical procedures includes an inner member with a forceps movably disposed within a middle tubular member having a distal end configured to hold a plurality of elastic rings in an expanded state and a proximal end with a plurality of longitudinally spaced steps. The middle tubular member is movably disposed in an outer tubular member, and an adjustable stop mechanism is mounted on the proximal end of the outer tubular member to limit axial movement of the outer tubular member relative to the middle tubular member to select which rings are to be ejected. A distal handle is connected with the inner member via slots in the outer and middle tubular members, and a proximal handle is pivotally connected to the middle tubular member via a slot in the outer tubular member. A pusher has a distal end movable between a latched or locked position where the distal end of the pusher protrudes into apertures in the outer and middle tubular members to prevent pivotal movement of the proximal handle and an unlatched or unlocked position where the distal end of the pusher is disengaged from the aperture in the middle tubular member to permit pivotal movement of the proximal handle in order to move the outer tubular member axially relative to the middle tubular member to eject an elastic ring. Distal portions of the outer and middle tubular members are preferably transparent with scale markings formed thereon to allow the surgeon to accurately determine the length of the tissue disposed within the middle tubular member prior to ejecting a ring. A prerelease feature is also disclosed for unlocking the pusher to allow ejection of a ring when the forceps has not been completely withdrawn in to the middle tubular member.

Ring applicator and method for applying elastic rings to anatomical tissue structures

An apparatus and method delivers an expandable body member into a uterine cavity of a uterus through a cervical opening and deploys the expandable body member in the uterine cavity. The expandable body member in a compressed state is inserted into the uterine cavity. A fluid is provided to the uterine cavity at a pressure sufficient to inflate the uterine cavity. The expandable body member expands from the compressed state to the expanded state. After expansion of the expandable body member and inflation of the uterine cavity, the fluid pressure is relieved thereby collapsing the uterine cavity about the expandable body member in the expanded state such that an endometrial layer of the uterus and a surface of the expandable body member substantially contact each other in a facially opposing relationship maximizing contact therebetween. The apparatus which performs the method includes an elongated tubular member having the expandable body member connected to a distal portion of the elongated tubular member and a fluid-providing device connected to a proximal portion of the elongated tubular member.

Apparatus and method for delivering and deploying an expandable body member in a uterine cavity

A device useful in minimally-invasive procedures involving the visualization, dissection and/or harvesting of vessels in the body includes a shaft having a handle mounted on one end and a dissecting tip on the other end. The dissecting tip optionally includes a light source for directing light transverse of the tip and structures to retain the tip in position adjacent the vessel as the tip is advanced along the vessel. Also disclosed are associated methods for transilluminating a vessel, dissecting the vessel from surrounding tissue, and transecting the vessel and side branches and removing the vessel from the body.

Methods and devices for visualizing, dissecting and harvesting vessels and the like

A surgical device for use with a video display and for retracting, viewing, and accessing tissue is described. The surgical device comprises an elongated platform and a concave head connected to a distal end of the platform. The concave head defines a cavity that provides a working space for an end-effector of an instrument. The surgical device further comprises an image sensor attached to the inside of the concave head so that tissue within the working space may be imaged by the image sensor to provide an electrical signal for a video display. The surgical device further comprises an illumination means for illuminating tissue within and adjacent to the cavity of the concave head. A power source is provided for powering the image sensor and the illumination means. A handle is attached to the proximal end of the platform.

A system for establishing an anastomotic passageway between first and second structures within an animal, the first and second structures each having an intima-exposing opening comprises a first plate sized and configured for attachment to the opening of the first structure, the first plate including an attaching portion having means for gripping first structure at its opening, the first plate further including a coupling portion which is positioned exterior of the first structure when the first plate is attached to the first structure; a second plate sized and configured for attachment to the opening of the second structure, the second plate including an attaching portion having means for gripping the second structure at its opening, the second plate further including a coupling portion which is positioned exterior of the second structure when the second plate is attached to the second structure; and means for connecting the coupling portion of said first plate with the coupling portion of said second plate.
