A flexible bag having expansible and collapsible cells can be used in a liquid dispenser. A rigid manifold, and in one instance a rigid frame is provided in the bag to keep passages open in use and to isolate one of the cells from the remaining cells. The manifold is capable of altering the volume of one of the cells so that the same bag can be used in different applications.

A liquid dispenser uses a flexible bag having expansible and collapsible cells. A rigid manifold, and in one instance a rigid frame is provided in the bag to keep passages open in use and to isolate one of the cells from the remaining cells. The dispenser employs an efficient and quiet air pressure operating system. In one application, a concentrated drink mix may be held in a reservoir and diluted within other cells in the bag for dispensing to a cup or the like. A valve system allows for the particulates in the liquid without compromising the function of the valve.

A pump has a flexible liner which is expanded and contracted by application of positive and negative fluid pressure for receiving and discharging fluent material. The liner is received in a rigid shell which defines the maximum volume received. In discharging fluent material, a vacuum is applied to one side of the liner, while applying pressure to the other side so the liner is collapsed against the rigid shell. The liner is arranged so as to be the only part of the pump which contacts the fluent material, and is replaceable to effect rapid and easy cleaning of the pump. The liner has multiple pump cells which can expand and contract for moving fluent material through the pump cell. The pump cells can be sized and arranged so that by selection of particular pump cells which receive the fluent material, precise volumes can be metered by the pump.

A valve is disclosed for dispensing a flowable material. The valve has a first chamber () at a first pressure wherein said first chamber () defines an outlet () in communication with said first chamber (). A second chamber () is at a second pressure. The valve has a stop () indexed against a third pressure, operating to selectively place the first chamber () into communication with the second chamber (). The stop () is operative to connect the second chamber () to said first chamber () when the first pressure is less than the third pressure.

Vacuum demand flow valve

A method for manufacturing in which a fluent material is dispensed to an article such as a container from a flexible bag The fluent material is dispensed directly to the container without any intervening structure which contacts the fluent material. Accordingly, the apparatus can be constructed of less expensive materials and does not require frequent cleaning. The apparatus acts on the bag to dispense and does not act on the fluent material. Thus, the apparatus has particular application where aseptic conditions need to be maintained such as in the packaging of the food and medicine The flexible bag is preferably formed with multiple outlets permitting simultaneous dispensing to multiple containers.

An infusion pump ( ) includes a reservoir ( ) containing a therapeutic liquid to be infused. The reservoir ( ) includes an outlet ( ) for the liquid. A volumetric air pump ( ) is operatively associated with the reservoir ( ) to pressurize the reservoir and thus drive liquid out the outlet ( ). A valve ( ) is operatively associated with the outlet ( ) and prevents the flow of liquid through the outlet until a select threshold pressure is obtained in the outlet. The valve thereafter maintains an opening in the outlet that keeps the pressure in the reservoir ( ) at substantially the select threshold pressure, whereby the volumetric flow rate of liquid through the outlet ( ) is proportional to the volumetric flow rate of air from the volumetric air pump ( ). The valve ( ) varies the opening in the outlet to maintain the select pressure. The outlet preferably consists of a flexible conduit ( ) having a select undeformed inner cross-sectional area and the valve ( ) variably restricts the flow of liquid through the outlet by pinching a segment of the conduit to vary the inner cross-sectional area of the segment of the conduit. A method of infusing therapeutic liquid to a patient includes providing a reservoir ( ) containing a therapeutic liquid, providing a volumetric air pump ( ) to pressurize the reservoir to flow liquid out the liquid reservoir through an outlet ( ) and maintaining a select pressure in the reservoir so that liquid through the liquid outlet is proportional to the volumetric flow rate of the volumetric air pump.

A medical infusion pump is disclosed which provides for greatly improved accuracy in the delivery of medicaments to a patient. Among the various features included in the instant invention is a pumping body which serves to deform and reform a tube so as to maintain the initial cross-section thereof and thereby preserve the output accuracy of the pump. Also disclosed with regard to the pumping body is a wholly mechanical synchronization of the pumping body and valves associated therewith and coactive with the aforementioned synchronization a mechanical linearization of output of the pumping body per each pumping cycle. Additionally, several features which serve to enhance the utility of the instant invention are also included therein among which is an associated assembly operative to automatically load or disload a tube or IV set into or out of the pumping body. Associated with the assembly operative to automatically load or disload a tube and disclosed herein is an assembly operative to selectively open or close a slide clamp associated with the tube in such a way as to ensure that the tube is occluded such that in combination with the valves associated with the pumping body, a condition of free-flow of medicament is never realized. Additionally disclosed are sensor housings adapted to measure various quantities associated with fluid flowing through the tube wherein the housings are with associated components adapted to achieve a substantially normal orientation with respect to the sidewall of the tube and in the achieving of such normal orientation, expressing an essentially zero elastic stress gradient across the tube.

Volumetric infusion pump

A pumping device controlling an amount of liquid passing through a length of tubing accommodated in the pumping device. The pumping device includes inlet and outlet valves located adjacent opposed sides of a tube deforming device. The valves are controllable for restricting the flow of liquid through the tubing, and the deforming device is such that the tubing is first deformed in one direction and then in another direction which tends to restore the original cross-sectional shape of the tubing.
