A method and system for handover of a mobile station (MS) to an unlicensed mobile access network controller (UNC) in an unlicensed mobile access network (UMAN). In one embodiment, the MS sends an unlicensed mobile access (UMA) radio resource (URR) Registration Request message to the UNC with one or more location identifiers for the MS. The location identifiers may include a GSM Cell Global Identity, an access point (AP) Radio Identity, a set of GPS coordinates, or an AP location. The UNC selects absolute radio frequency channel numbers (ARFCN) and base station identity codes (BSIC) values from a table based on the location identifiers and returns them to the MS in a URR Registration Accept message.

Method and system for improved handover of mobile stations to unlicensed mobile access networks

An unlicensed-radio access network is connected to a packet service node in a core network portion of a licensed mobile network. The unlicensed-radio access network includes an access controller connected to the core network portion and having a packet controller, a fixed broadband network connected to the access controller and having a plurality of access points. Each of the access points defines a mini-cell coverage area and supports an unlicensed-radio interface permitting communication of packet data between mobile stations located within a respective mini-cell and the access controller. The access controller comprises a database for storing the identification of mobile stations in association with packet path information addressing said mobile station on the fixed broadband network.

Packet radio transmission over an unlicensed-radio access network

A system and method in an unlicensed-radio access network for transporting a circuit-switched payload between an access network controller and a mobile station utilizing a packet-based transmission protocol. The controller sends to the mobile station, a channel activation message that includes a minimum acceptable sample size of the circuit-switched payload to be included in each packet. The mobile station determines whether it can support communications utilizing the minimum acceptable sample size, and if not, selects a larger sample size. The mobile station may send an acknowledgment message that indicates the sample size to be utilized. Alternatively, the mobile station begins transmitting packets, and the controller analyzes received packets to determine the sample size the mobile station is using. The controller then encodes transmissions to the mobile station utilizing the determined sample size.

Frame size adaptation in real-time transport protocol

A method and apparatus for preparing a vendor- and version-independent information model that a cellular telephone base station can use to communicate its capabilities in a plug and play fashion to a network element is disclosed. The information model can also be used to communicate configuration information back to the base station from the network element. The capabilities and configuration information is automatically communicated and utilized, thus reducing the possibility of human operator error in configuring and pre-configuring new or modified base station equipment.

Open 'plug and play' O and M architecture for a radio base station

The present invention relates to method and means for a system initiated subscriber information redistribution in order to achieve a load redistribution within a pool of core network nodes. The subscribers, that are affected by the redistribution, are determined by the bit values in their TMSI's. These specific TMSI's are then arranged to be treated as invalid by the cellular system. Messages etc. from subscribers with invalid TMSI's will be 'trapped' in the cellular system and the subscriber information that belongs to these subscribers will be redistributed to new core network nodes.
