A method for data exchange between a user equipment and a network node over a bearer service in a communication system. A virtual access network identifier identifies a connectionless bearer service on which a network service is mapped. A logical channel identifier identifies a connection oriented bearer service on which the network service is mapped. The data is exchanged between the user equipment and the network node over the connection oriented bearer service or over the connectionless bearer service depending on the amount of exchanged data and/or the data bit rate and/or the expiration of a timer.

A method for handover in a wireless communications network includes the step of communicating information between a target network node and a source network node to enable the source network node to identify and to distinguish types of failures prior to, during or after handover. A method of data forwarding during handover in a mobile communication system is provided. The mobile communication system comprising a plurality of base stations and a base station, the base station being coupled to a gateway, a telecommunication link being established between a user equipment and the base station. One of the eNBis a handover target node and also reserves resources for the UE in anticipation of receiving it after handover. The other eNBsanddo not reserve resources. In the event of radio link failure, the UE may attach to one of the designated eNBsandthat have not reserved resources, but that do recognize the UE because they have received its context. The method reduces the likelihood of the UE needing to go via the time consuming IDLE state while only reserving resources at a handover target eNB.
