A recording-material-storing device includes a detection object whose position is to be detected, a pressing portion that is movable toward and away from a side of a recording material placed in the recording-material-storing device and is to be pressed against the side, and a moving portion that moves the detection object by undergoing a relative motion with respect to the pressing portion when the pressing portion is moved.

A sheet transport device includes first to third rotating members, a sheet position detector, and a controller. The first member transports a sheet at a first speed. The second member transports the sheet at a second speed that is lower than the first speed. The third member in a stopped state receives the sheet and subsequently resumes transporting to perform positional correction thereon. The detector detects positions of leading and trailing edges of the sheet. The controller performs control such that, when a preset time elapses after the detector detects that the leading edge has reached the third member, the third member is caused to resume transporting at the second speed, and when the detector detects that the leading edge has passed the second member, the third member is increased in speed from the second speed to the first speed.

A medium feeding device includes a medium-accommodating container, a loading member supported within the container and loading a medium thereon, a holding member, and a blocking unit. The holding member has a holding member body, gas suction openings, a peripheral member, a chamber surrounded by the peripheral member, and a suction unit connected to the gas suction openings and performing gas suction. The holding member holds the medium by suction. The gas suction openings include a gas suction opening disposed inside an edge of the peripheral member and outside an edge of the medium. The blocking unit blocks the suction of gas through the aforementioned gas suction opening.

A sheet feeder includes a sheet stacking unit that stacks sheets, a sheet feeding unit that sequentially feeds the uppermost sheet of a stack of sheets stacked in the sheet stacking unit, an airflow supply unit that supplies an airflow to a side surface of the stack of sheets from an opening, a shield member that is disposed between the opening and the stack of sheets and a mechanism that changes the airflow from the airflow supply unit with respect to a stacking direction of the sheets by changing a relative position between the opening and the shield member in a direction other than the stacking direction of the sheets.

A sheet feeder includes: air blowing device which blows air from a direction of side edges of a stack of sheets loaded in a predetermined location, paper feed device which separates one sheet from the stack of sheets to which air is blown by the air blowing device and which feeds the thus-separated sheet from the predetermined location, and air flow regulation device which is provided in an elevated position above the stack of sheets loaded in the predetermined location and which regulates the passage of the air flow blown toward the stack of sheets from the air blowing device.
