A honeycomb sandwich structure formed of face skin materials made of fiber reinforced plastics and a honeycomb core has a structure in which an optical fiber sensor structure is embedded in an adhesive layer formed between the face skin materials and the honeycomb core. With this, it is possible to provide a honeycomb sandwich structure and a method of manufacturing the honeycomb sandwich structure that enable precise thermal control to be implemented even when a thermal control device is bonded onto a surface of the honeycomb sandwich structure and enable evaluation of a temperature with high resolution and high accuracy.

A structure ratio of the advanced grid structure is larger than 0 and 0.107 or less, 0.053 or less, or 0.040 or less. A thermal expansion coefficient of the advanced grid structure is &#x2212;0.9 ppm/K or more and 0.9 ppm/K or less. The carbon fibers have a tensile modulus of elasticity of 280 GPa or more and 330 GPa or less.

A satellite equipment panel on which may be mounted an installation equipment of a predetermined function, connectable by an interface, constitutes an artificial satellite. The satellite equipment panel includes a panel body, at least two interfaces for an interconnection to another satellite equipment panel, a line transfer switch disposed within the panel body for line transferring of the interconnection between the interfaces, wiring disposed within the panel body and connected at one end to one of the interfaces and at the other end to the line transfer switch for interconnecting the interfaces on that panel body. A polarization dispersion compensation apparatus includes a polarization controller, a polarization beam splitter, an optical delay circuit, and a polarization beam combiner. The polarization controller controls polarization of an optical signal so that the polarization axis of the input optical signal substantially coincides with the optical axis of an optical transmission line, and the polarization beam splitter section splits the optical signal into two polarized components perpendicular to each other. The optical delay circuit section causes a difference in delay between the two polarized components, and the polarization beam combiner section combines the two polarized components output from the optical delay circuit section. Each of the polarization beam splitter section and the polarization beam combiner section includes a symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer having optical transmission lines in two arms, each arm including a temperature control and a birefringence portion for compensating polarization dispersion between the two polarized components.

A method of manufacturing a grating in an optical waveguide that includes a core and a cladding covering the core. The method includes scanning a laser beam along an optical axis of the optical waveguide to modulate the refractive index of the core. The core is made of a material having a refractive index that is changeable upon irradiation by radiation. In addition, in scanning the core, the irradiation range of the laser beam is controlled and the core is scanned several times.
